Spooktober 2023 Associated prompt: Stalk
"Aww man-"Creepers are a strange mix of nature magic and necromancy created primarily by some druidic circles that worship The Code. This monster is most widely known for its unique method of defense: blowing up itself and its surroundings.
Nature
Appearance
Made of skulls of creatures past and composed of native foliage and barely contained magic, Creepers are typically found in various shades of greens with hints of brown. Unless a creeper's camouflage is actively changed, the state it spawned in is typically the state it stays in, regardless of the biome it wanders into. The skull is typically covered in moss so dark it seems black, leading its eye and nose sockets to stand out against the greens of its camouflage.Abilities
Their natural composition leads them to be incredibly stealthy, including natural camouflage and an innate ability to move quietly through the nature around them. Its notorious explosion is less a firey blaze, such as with other known explosives, but more of a previously contained whirlwind let loose, letting loose force damage and its own camouflage serving as debris and shrapnel.Behavior
Its ability to prioritize long-term survival is seemingly non-existent, as any threat to its territory will cause it to focus on a singular target, stalk as close as it can, and then with the hiss of a magical fuse, explode in a burst of force and debris. Creepers will give a wide berth or even run away from cats, ocelots, and feline creatures. It is believed that creepers were originally created by druids of the jungle who often kept pets and companions, and that safeguard continues to be passed along to those learning the craft.Spawning
Habitats
Originally believed to have originated from druidic circles in Jungle biomes of the Overworld, creepers have since spread out across all known biomes, excluding the elusive Mushroom Fields . Creepers have also managed to make their way below ground as well, into the large cave systems that encapsulate the underground environments. Creepers have been found in Lush Caves and Dripstone Caves.Reasons For Spawning
While the reasons are generally speculated on and debated, some of the known reasons for creating a creeper are as follows:
To deter outsiders
Creepers, for all their destructive capabilities, are quite adept alarm systems. Not only will they alert anyone in the near vicinity of an enemy, they will damage that enemy as well to allow for easier capture or defeat.
To protect something precious
Despite their destructive nature, or perhaps because of it, creepers have been known to protect powerful artifacts, sacred sites, or simply designated areas from outsiders. This is where creepers will be in larger numbers, though usually no more than seven (in the most extreme case). Their ability to sneak up on intruders and injure, shock, and even kill is a large boon to any seeking to protect an area. However, if a creeper is too close to what they are trying to protect, they may destory the area and/or the item in the process. Sometimes this is by design, but often is not ideal and should be planned for.
To unleash pent up emotions of the caster
Creepers are volitile monsters, made to destroy in a burst of energy. To create a creeper, this burst must be concentrated into the spell, often making quite a cathartic experience for the caster. However, this method can be abused and often will lead to the creepers destroying their creator due to carelessness, recklessness, or sheer number. To create a creeper with no objective is to create a wild being whose only purpose is to destroy; and it usually will not linger to find someone other than the caster.
