The L-gates, long dormant, have been activated by Federal scientists. On the other side residing in the L-cluster, a civilization exposed to be an intelligent renegade nanite entity is released upon the galaxy.

The L-Gates have long fascinated the scientific community with the Federation. Many debated whether reactivating them would bring boons or banes. It was finally decided that after all possible precautions were taken, that the L-gates would be activated.   Upon activation, the Federation was greeted by the Dessanu Consonance, a civilization isolated within the L-cluster. While previous research would point to nanites being closely tied to the L-Gates, the Dessanu denied any knowledge of nanites. Unsatisfied, intelligence operatives would sneak into the heart of the L-Cluster and discover massive nanite production facilities. Confronted with undeniable evidence, the Dessanu revealed themselves to be nanites that destroyed and replaced their creators, who managed to shut off the L-gates before the nanites could invade the greater galaxy.   Now free and exposed, The nanites would send extermination fleets through the L-Gates, but the Great Bulwark crushed any hostile ships that dared to encroach outside the L-Cluster. The Gray Tempest's offensive was over before it began. Federation Fleets stationed nearby would invade the L-cluster and target the Main facility that controlled the nanites. After its destruction, all nanites deactivated, and the Gray Tempest was terminated. The Terminal Egress, where the original L-gate resides, was reinforced with a Solar station and a naval base. The L-cluster itself was colonized and brought under Federation control.
