Dominique Francois

Chancellor Dominique Francois

Dominique Francois was the first Chancellor of the Caribbean Union. Francois was the son of an educated slave. She acquired some knowledge of French, as well as a few other local languages. Winning the favor of the plantation warlord, she became a livestock handler, healer, coachman, and finally steward. Legally freed in 1776, she married and had two sons. Francois was homely, short, and small framed. She dressed simply and was abstemious and a vegetarian. Although she slept little, her energy and capacity for work were astonishing. As a leader she inspired awe and adulation.
