Yuraalian Monarchy
The royal family has reigned over the Empire of Yuraal since time immemorial. In the days of monarchic rule, the Empress was the sovereign ruler of the nation. In current times, the Empress is no longer the supreme authority, but she remains an important figure both culturally and politically.
Structure
The royal family is headed by the Empress, who is also the nominal head of the Empire itself. Her spouse is the Emperor Consort (or Princess Consort she may have additional consorts as well. Her children, along with other members of the royal family, are princes and princesses.
Only women are eligible to inherit the imperial throne, but all female-line descendants of the imperial line are eligible as potential heirs, including those in cadet branches. The actual successor is named by the Imperial Oracle, on behalf of the Mother Goddess; an empress lacking divine appointment would not be seen as legitimate. This has occasionally resulted in the throne being passed to more distant relatives of a deceased empress, such as a cousin's descendants.
History
The royal lineage predates historical records, but the royal family are said to be descended from the Mother Goddess Herself. Many early empresses are legendary figures, enshrined in Yuraal's mythology.
Territories
Nominally, the Empire of Yuraal belongs to the Empress in its entirety. In practice, however, she and her family only exert direct control over the imperial palace complex: the official residence of the royal family.
Military
The Empress is the head of the armed forces. This is only a ceremonial role, however.
Religion
The royal family has a close relationship with the clergy. Not only have members of the clergy historically served as both spiritual and political advisors to the Empress (prior to the transition to democracy).
