The Dark

The Dark is on the southern tip of the continent of Galan. The Dark is an environmental phenomenon, or error, that makes the entire region always dark, "day" time casts shadows strangely and the area is a little more visible, but for most of the day it is almost pitch black with no stars and rarely a moon or two. It is a circular-like shape that surrounds the land and water of southern Galan. The Dark borders Rislea, Countslavia, and Braveholm. The dark was not always there most scholars believe, but yet they are unsure when it first appeared. Most history books document The Dark, but some early entries from Rislea do not mention the giant anomaly. There few societies within the region, Novagorod being the largest as well as Thraxia. Most of the land is barren or has scattered settlements that seem to almost jump from different locations in the region.
The Dark's main threats are not the endless night or the harsh cold. The Dark is home to many monsters, beasts, and mortals that would love to find a lost traveler. Giant insects inhabit the desert south of Rislea. Shades, ghosts, and undead wander all parts of The Dark. Traveling Kenku and tribes of Gnolls travel across the wastes, hunting, and gather. Huge beasts that have never been recorded before have been cited in the region and the amount is completely unknown. Almost nothing is known about The Dark besides what the inner nations have told, and even then they do not share much information with the outside world.
Adventurers pride themselves on traveling to the region and slaying giant monsters and evil foes. Magic seems to grow wild here so magic casters often come to practice insane abilities. It is usually a fool's errand as most of these travelers end up dead or never return for reasons unknown.
