Novice - Jewelcrafting Rank/Title in Corvayn | World Anvil

Novice - Jewelcrafting

"I believe the guild finds them more of a nuisance than a rank. Seemingly anyone can associate themselves with the guild by calling themselves a novice. Thus the guild must distance itself from this rabble with no direct communication or support to form a plausible deniability should they get themselves killed or mar the reputation we've established."
Crossings administrator, Expert Jewelcrafter

Qualifications

None. Anyone can call themselves a novice jewelcrafter as long as they have access to gems and the equpiment to shape them. To become recognized by the guild takes more work. At this point in their training, pebbleshapers can only cut lower quality gems: malachite, pearls, glass, diamonds etc.

Appointment

Novices aren't raised to this rank but must work closely with a journeyman if they hope to rise in the ranks of this guild.

Duties

Journeyman - Jewelcrafting often need low quality gems to seat in their creations. Novices are expected to practice with these gems and once they have become proficient, Journeyman - Jewelcrafting will start to buy the novice cut gems from them. This is an informal mentor/mentee process that will lead to the novice becoming a full fledged member of the Gem Cutters Guild.

Benefits

Pebbleshapers don't earn much money; the gems they cut are often worth less than the gems would be worth uncut. Ringmakers will buy these gems from them once they are cut well enough to seat in jewelry. Only then will a novice start to earn an appreciable sum for their work.

Accoutrements & Equipment

A simple jeweler's kit is all that is needed, not even a workshop.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A person claiming to be a novice may be black listed by the Gem Cutters Guild if they are creating items of terrible quality in the guild's name. A jeweler's reputation is often the key to their success and belonging to the guild is one key component of that. The guild must protect its reputation from the douchers.
