Session 27 - The Undertaker

General Summary

The letter is quite an ominous one, the Undertaker has requested the party meet them in an unknown clearing. Violet, ever the cautious one, speaks to Prince Carnys about it and decides she, alongside the party, should meet with the Undertaker, if only to hear them out. The letter only appears to be a threat if the party is looking for a fight. At best, the party might be able to squeeze some information out of them. At worst, they walk away and pray it’s not a set-up.
Together the party venture out into the forest, watching as vultures above them fly in circles, guiding them to a clearing. The rain is awful, pouring on their backs and soaking through armor and clothing, mud cakes their boots as the elements fight against them. The Undertaker waits in what appears to be an old gravesite for ancient heroes, probably dating back centuries. They stand over an empty grave which they’ve dug up. They turn to the party as they approach.
The Undertaker is a looming figure, they stand tall, probably seven feet or more, taller than even Bond Borsmount. They have a menacing aura from the start, when Alastor attempts to use Divine Sense he feels such an overwhelming Undead presence that it breaks his focus. He warns the group, causing the Undertaker to turn and address the party.
When the Undertaker speaks, their voice is a cacophony of voices. In a sense, they are a jigsaw puzzle of words, each one seemingly uttered in different contexts overlapped, there are tens of hundreds of voices speaking at once to make up their voice. This strange cadence is equally foreboding as they present their offer to Violet, with the rest of the party present to discuss.
The deal is simple, the Undertaker will assist Violet in harnessing power from Touarch. She will be on the same playing field as the Consecrants who seemingly draw some of their power from the Aspects. The Undertaker points to the party’s losing position, the fact that in their current state, they are weaker than the Consecrants who are seemingly well-planned and well-trained. In exchange, Violet will get the Undertaker entry into a tunnel beneath Drakenmarch which leads to Castle Crimson.
Briefly he explains the importance of the location. One of Corondor’s previous monarchs, Vy’shera II, had earned her crown by killing her younger brother, Haevon I, in a tunnel which he had been using to flee the city. His body was cut down and left to rot, with any jewels he had carried long since scavenged. The tunnel had then been sealed and forgotten about from the outside, but the entrance into Castle Crimson is still likely findable. The Undertaker wants access to the body for some unknown reason.
Finally, the Undertaker gives Violet one more addition to sweeten the deal. Violet’s pact with Touarch stipulates that she must make up for the soul that she had refused Touarch during the Ambrosia debacle months ago. She has yet to fulfill the deal and walks around readily with someone newly revived. The God of the Underworld demands tribute, and the Undertaker offers to fulfill it this one time, given Violet’s cooperation.
The party takes a moment to huddle and consider their options. At first, they present a list of demands to the Undertaker as to who they could and could not kill. But these demands are… impossible to complete. The Undertaker only gives the group one of their stipulations, that they will not kill any of the party members to complete Touarch’s tribute.
Eventually, the deal settles. Violet agrees, given that she takes responsibility for the slaughter and works with the Undertaker rather than remaining ignorant. The Undertaker agrees, and the party departs from there.
They begin the long trot through the forest in the rain, boots wet with mud as they enter the city only to be met by Chimera banners and the sleek golden armor of House Ljonguard. Leading the pack is the two eldest Ljonguard children—Leora and Yara Ljonguard. Both with their golden hair sparkling in the rain obnoxiously, the pair sick with wealth and power. Calum splits off to follow them while the rest trail the procession from the back.
Calum sees the pair stop as a lone rider approaches. The rider is an older man with golden streaks in his hair, breaching through the gray who the group soon identifies as Vasilios Ljonguard, Hand of the King. With the three moving into the castle, Calum meets back up with the party to update them and the group decide to head back to the barracks.
