Session 25 - Lycanthro-pie
General Summary
Prior to the start of this session, Calum takes the opportunity to speak with Prince Carnys. In it, the prince affirms his previous conversation with Celeste—Calum needs to become more responsible. As a result, Carnys decides to give Calum a pseudodragon named Ostentia to compensate.
Of course, the little dragon is a baby and very unruly. Even as Calum tries to get books for her, she’s not exactly compliant to listen to him. He gets the help of a very reluctant Lucerys Tandor’thal, and recovers the adequate books on parenting, pseudodragon care, and general children’s books (for Calum’s reading, not Ostentacia), before leaving for the barracks.
The moment Ostentacia is in the barracks she starts running around out of Calum’s grasp, exploring the place with whimsical curiosity as Calum runs after her. She’s hungry, so the group tries to get some chicken from the chef.
As they have just been banned from his kitchen, this naturally doesn’t go well.
In the end, Asha politely asks someone else, not from their group, to ask for the chicken. This leads them to once more learning that they are, most certainly, banned. However, they do get the raw chicken and some directions for a small butchery to go to the next time they need chicken.
With some relief, the party is able to settle Ostentacia and have a relatively easy night. They are told that tomorrow will be their first little mission assigned by Carnys and they are given compasses which denote the location of where they are meant to go in the city. As long as Carnys marks a location, their compasses will always lead them to their target, making city navigation much easier.
In the morning they set off alongside Aenyr Daybreak, who tells the party that he’s there to supervise their first mission as there are two parts to it. Some farmers reported a creature destroying their fence and stealing some chickens, of course, this is a concerning issue for commoners. Aenyr intends to go out into the forest and catch the beasts around; the party, on the other hand, is expected to repair the fence for the couple.
When they arrive, the information rings true. An elderly farming couple reports that their fence has been broken in, but luckily none of the sheep escaped. A few chickens had been destroyed but nothing too harmful. Aenyr quickly sets off, telling the party to be good, while the party gets to work fixing the fence.
Celeste leads the project, as the one more experienced with tools, while the rest of the party assists in chopping wood, digging holes for the fence poles, and otherwise keeping the area clean.
Calum is sent to get some of the extra tools the farming couple said the party could borrow, but when he enters into the shed he’s quick to spot a small girl, a teenager. Probably around fifteen or so years old. She’s hunched in a corner, a few feathers next to her as she looks like a deer in headlights seeing Calum.
Despite precautions, Calum takes care of the situation calmly, reassuring the girl and asking the right questions to get her to open up. He learns her name of Holly of the Third Hour and that she’s a bastard, with some careful probing and assistance from Asha he also figures out that she is a lycanthrope and the likely cause of the issue with the fence. Of course, this also comes to the realization that Aenyr Daybreak absolutely knew someone was in the shed and left the party to deal with it.
Calum convinces the girl that she’s okay, and that it’s better she resolve the situation then run. He gives her enough money to pay the couple for the chickens and brings her out of the shed to apologize directly. Violet and Celeste take notice of this, and the information is passed on to them as they continue to repair the fence.
Holly follows Calum’s advice, and luckily the couple is very friendly, hugging the girl and sitting her down to eat a full meal. The farming couple then passes around some slices of pie and fresh apple juice to the entire party as a thank you for their hard work, melting the hearts of Violet and Celeste.
It’s a certified mommy/daddy issue moment.
