Session 14 - Double Jeopardy

General Summary

For the rest of the day the party mourned, setting up a small vigil for Kettlewyck in the woods in hope that he might rest peacefully—even if they are wholly aware of the looming presence of Touarch. Alastor is not invited, per Celeste’s understanding of what Kettlewyck would want. The man in life feared Alastor, and likely still feared him in death. Together, the rest of the party made a small offering of gold and buried it in the woods as done in the traditions of the Goldlands. In the meantime, Alastor prayed to the Gods, specifically Cabreos, for Kettlewyck’s good fortune.
Following the wake, there were fractured conversations with Alastor which eventually ended in Celeste taking him to the stables with the intention of showing Alastor the horse which Kettlewyck had given them. The two were not met with the horse they expected, instead what was in front of them was a pegasus, the symbol for Cabreos, with feathers gilded in gold. The two argue for a bit before being informed by a stablehand that this pegasus is, in fact, their horse. This revelation causes a shock which eventually leads to the rest of the party also going to the stables and having a peaceful moment by Butter and their new pegasus companion.
After a few brief conversations, Alastor takes the lead to visit the chapel with the intention of meeting with Lord Laurent Dayne of Starfall. Young Astoria Dayne had mentioned that her father had gone to the chapel the day before, it was only natural that he’d be there again for afternoon prayer. When they arrived, the service had just concluded, with members walking out. The group waited until Lord Laurent Dayne rose. There was a moment where he spotted Alastor and the rest of the group, and quickly ushered his family out the doors with the intent to follow until Alastor halted him.
What followed was a long, public exchange. Lord Dayne was calm, and heavily exhausted speaking with Alastor. Alastor, on the other hand, was cruel and desperate. The two went over many topics, first the issue of Laurent’s family. Lord Dayne requested Alastor stay away from his family, and that the coin which Alastor had given to Astoria had been disrespectful. In response, Alastor called Lord Dayne’s wife a whore in all but those words. The conversation continued to escalate from there, where Alastor revealed that he had murdered Lord Dayne’s, and thus his own, mother. Despite being the favorite child, he professed that he had killed her in cold blood and taunted Lord Dayne at how he failed to protect his family.
There was a moment where Alastor attempted to strike Lord Dayne, but the lord’s hero status shined brightly as he prevented Alastor from striking him while keeping composed. Lord Dayne claimed that he would not engage in any fights unless Alastor acted against his family or committed some other crime. Alastor had already received his punishment for the slaying, and Lord Dayne does not believe in double jeopardy.
Further topics covered included the fact that Alastor had gone North at some point in his life and sent letters which Lord Dayne hadn’t replied to. In response, Lord Dayne claimed he never received letters, in fact, his own letters had never received a response either—likely an issue with mail traveling from opposite ends of the realm.
Finally, on the topic of the killing. Alastor first taunted Lord Dayne about how his mother’s body looked when dead. But the questioning soon became genuine as he asked Lord Dayne what it had looked like. The lord refused his questions. Alastor became befuddled, but Lord Dayne was seemingly too exhausted and concerned about his family to further engage with Alastor. The rest of the party were unphased as he left the chapel.
The events following were disastrous as Calum gave Alastor a piece of his mind for kinslaying his own mother while Celeste and Asha worked to deescalate the situation. In the end, the group were summoned to meet with Prince Carnys Tandor’thal after receiving a missive delivered by a small grouping of pseudodragons. As a result, despite the tension, the party made their way over to the Osrepus with no expectations as to what they were being summoned for.
