Vollis
This is a major trading center in the northern foothills of the Spine. The area around Vollis contains a major mining complex off at least a half dozen large mines providing copper and lead. The town's most unusual feature is that it has a Dark Corgerian majority population with large minorities of Half-Castes and Danite. As a result, the town wakes up in the late afternoon and runs at full blast throughout the night before quieting down during the early hours of the morning. As a result of this, Vollis is often referred to as night town.
Demographics
Roughly 3,000 of the town's inhabitants are Dark Corgerian, perhaps 500 more are Dark Corgerian half-castes, 400 are Danites and the balance is Northrons and Mountaineers. The last two groups is roughly equally divided between Corgerians and humans.
Government
The town is presided over by a Sheriff appointed by the Baron in consultation with the town's major clans which form a town council.
Defences
The town is located on a hill top and has a 15' wall running around its perimeter with towers at regular intervals. Many of the leading clans of the town have built compounds of considerable defensive value. The town's cobblestone streets are steep, narrow and winding, lending themselves to barricades.
Industry & Trade
The town is known of the crafting of magical objects, alchemy, glassware and fine tapestries. It also serves as the market town for more mundane goods from the region particularly wool and leather.
Guilds and Factions
The town has six important Dark Corgerian clans and two Danite ones conflict between these groups is not unusual.
Architecture
The town is known for the distinctive communal homes of it major clans. These buildings are typically three or four stories tall and enclose a rectangular compound. The outside walls will have no doors other than one or two strong built gates with windows only appearing at the third and fourth story with heavy shutters as protection. The compounds can only be entered through a tunnel like passage into the central court yard. These passsages can be easily sealed with heavy wood and iron gates at each end. The buildings up onto the central courtyard with doors and windows at all levels. The middle of the compound will always have a fountain fed by a well or underground spring. Buildings throughout the town are generally made off cut stone blocks with steep slate shingled roofs to shed snow.
