Empire of Lao

The largest of the countries south of the Spine. The Empire is centered around the wide Khalis River which flows from the Spine down to the Southern Ocean. The river spreads out into a wide Delta whose rich silt feeds vast paddy lands growing rice. The Empires greatest city is its capital Alyathon (Alya's City). The Empire has existed in some form or other for the last five hundred years, but 120 years ago the Empire fell under the control of the Alyite Order. The Alyites had been fighting in support of the Empire's royal family until the royal family was killed by sorceress means. The Alyites decided to take over political control of the Empire. The new political systems emmeshed the Empire with the Alyite Order's governance.

Structure

The Empire is a constitutional monarchy. The highest ranking official of the Empire is the Priestess Queen, who is also the leader of the Alyite Order. She governs with as the first among equals with the Alyite Order's Council of Nine, which consists of a dozen high ranking priestesses and military leaders. Below them is the Council of the Empire, which consists of three representatives from each of the Empire's 22 provinces.

Demography and Population

The Empire has a population of some 15,000,000, with the most prominent group being Southron humans. Communities of Danites and Dark Corgerians can be found scattered around the Empire, but particularly in the cities. Southron Corgerians are make up perhaps ten percent of the population. Communities of migrant mountaineers and Northrons can be found along the Empire's northern edges.   Population is concentrated along the major river systems where rich deposits of silt encourage intensive rice farming.

Territories

The Empire is centered around the lowlands of Lao, a mainly flat region divided by numerous wide rivers.

Military

The Alyite Order plays an important role in defending the empire, but they are supplemented by a considerable military organization drawn from the Empires population. These troops take the form of Legions, each consisting of roughly 5,000 soldiers. The legions are mixed forces consisting of 20 percent mounted troops and 80 percent foots soldiers. Additionally unit of engineers, artillery and marines are deployed by the Imperial Army.

Religion

The Alyite faith has become prominent within the Empire, but is one of many fairs practiced with its boundaries.
