The Tower Gate

Probably the only natural structure in Sharrow's Hold the Tower Gate is a massive flat-topped pillar of rock some four hundred feet high and fifty feet in diameter. Half way up is what appears to be a gigantic black cave mouth. Leading down from it is a spiral ramp of rock, which was added when the city was built. Some refer to it as Sharrow's Drop, after the experience he anecdotally had when he first arrived here.   The cave mouth is in fact, the Gate, a portal between worlds and universes. The manner of it's operation is controlled by the Gatekeeper, who is whichever one of the Vigilant Investigators is on duty on the day. To use it, you simply inscribe the name of the place you want to go on a bar of gold (equivalent in value to 500 gold coins) then hold the bar as you speak the name of the place. The gold bar is consumed in the process of instantaneous travel. As with all types of transport, there are risks - in this case, a very small chance of arriving at a totally random location or even being shredded and distributed across the Multiverse in very small pieces.   When new arrivals appear, they'll see the gatekeeper (usually assisted by a pair of Constables), who will appear to be just a civilian functionary making notes. There is also an adamantine plaque embedded into the wall by the mouth of the cave, which reads; "Welcome to Sharrow's Hold, the best (and only) city on Confluence.  Please behave in a civilised manner in town. There is always someone tougher than you.".
