Morte

Morte, the city with death, is a merchant town near Alveolapis that looks out toward the Mortal Lands. In the past centuries, this town has lost its official name buried somewhere in the records of the island, and has become known as Morte. It used to be a fisherman's village of seafarers, fishers, and sailors for hire, but that was a long time ago. Since then the entire city has grown from a hamlet to a city and has been wiped out three times only to be rebuilt again bigger and better for its struggles as alumni from Alveolapis and retired professors are drawn to the towns picturesque scenery and its interesting, if horrifying, history.

The first wipe out saw the hamlet torn to shreds after a tidal wave crashed over the shore and flooded the space, killing about four hundred people both settled inhabitants and sailors or merchants who had been on shore leave that fateful night. After that it was rebuilt as a town with both stone walls around it and the houses made from stone with flood drainage systems to prevent a repeat catastrophe.

The second wipe out came when rats brought disease into the water canals underneath the city and an infection spread fast within the walls of the town, killing all of its inhabitants. Their diseased bodies that had gotten stuck in the canals when trying to flee from the disease are still being found today. After this a large hospital and quarantine part was added to the back of the town with a separate wall and drainage system in place, strict regulations for disease control were implemented, and exterminators were hired. Every ship landing here has to go through a rigorous decontamination routine and be exterminated, making the island a less reliable landing spot for merchants but increasing its value for non-trade-related visitors and aforementioned alumni looking to settle.

The third wipe out happened after magical parties had gotten into conflict over political control of the town that had grown into a small city by then, and that erupted in a civil war between Mages. Hundreds of both parties involved and civilians trying to avoid the conflict were killed, the town burnt down to the ground when explosive spells erupted. The war ended only when no one was left standing on either side, the last surviving Mage famously hanging herself in the quarantine area leaving behind a letter that everyone had been insane and should their bodies be found to not touch them with bare hands and to not bury them in the wild but to chain their bodies, lock them all into airtight caskets, bury them deeper than ever before, cover their caskets in woodstake ash, and keep their graves unmarked.

After this, the wish had been completed, the town rebuilt from the rubble, and magic has been forbidden as a practice with its use being permitted only in specific cases and only after personal permits being issued for healers or for special occasions with very limited applications. Furthermore most houses have gained safe rooms in their basements as well as a few publicly available safe rooms that are open to the public.
