Gritter Badgers Species in Colossus | World Anvil

Gritter Badgers

If you travel to the mountains of Chuck'Ruani there is a climb that one can make. It will take you to the plateau of the Silent Humming Bird.   Named after the death of a Sky Behemoth. It was in its infancy and never made it to adulthood. Said to of flown to this very plateau and took its eternal rest.   What climbers would find is a breed of rock badger known as Gritters. Grey and brown in colour with similar aesthetics as the common Badger.   However these beasts are much larger than their normal cousins. The Gritters use stone stacking to communicate among themselves. Moving them into different shapes and sizes.   Some have studied them for years, witnessing this and despite many surviving encounters with them never managed to work out the patterns.   But when observed from afar the Gritters used the stone stacking during mating season, coming together as if attending a moot of sorts.   The majority of stone stacking is done during the light of the moon, some as been done in the sun shine but moonlight is preferred.    At times it looks as though they are playing a style of the game chess. The communication always takes a long time as the stones are stacked very carefully.   Young Gritters bring stones too the speaking stack adding their own spin on whatever is being said.   On occasion a Gritter will approach climbers and such and either give them a stone to place. This has led to sharing the plateau when it is unsafe to climb any further.   The Gritters use all manner of stone including some precious looking ones. It is not uncommon to see a ruby or sapphire between the stacked rocks.   Some have theorized that the Gritters have magic and know exactly what they are doing, others think they may be preparing for something big, leaving these stacks for others to come along and read.

Ooh! I love how unique this form of communication is. Stone stacking? I wonder what they are saying, and why, especially with the implications of the last paragraph. I'm also curious if they will unstack and restack stones during a conversation and why they prefer to do this by moonlight (or are they just nocturnal or crepuscular?)

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .

Hi Barriesaxxy, I've only just seen this, still a WA noob :) thank you for your comments.   Stone stacking and the shapes they made is akin to hieroglyphics   They are crepuscular (I had to google this lol), the moon of Colossus is of magical creation (more lore yet to write)

It's Gravy Time!!
