The Watchers of Eternity

The Watchers of Eternity are a mysterious organization that has a strange ability to manipulate time. At first glance they appear to be simple mages wearing robes and walking with a staff. Upon closer inspection, it’s clear that they are unlike any mages most people have ever seen. They can be of any ancestry, their robes can vary in color, but they all have a small ticking clock worn about their neck like an amulet and on the heads of their staff is a glowing hourglass. If one looks closely, they can see that sand does fall from the top to the bottom of the hourglasses, but they never seem to run out. The Watchers make deals with people in return for time. For a few hours of a person’s life the Watcher may do a small service for them. For several months they may give a magical item to aid the dealmaker in something which they desire to be done. For years of one’s life they may give them a powerful artifact in return. They will also make deals by giving time to someone who has none in return for a service. Someone who is dying may be given a week or a month or even a year to get their affairs in order, be it making sure that their family is provided for or getting revenge of whoever tried to kill them. Once the time has run out though, there is no stopping it or bargaining for more time. The deal maker simply drops dead. No one knows their origins or where they preside when they depart. It is thought that perhaps they exist out of sync with normal time, which is why they believe all attempts to attack a Watcher fail. A physical attack or magical attack simply passes harmlessly through them as if they are not there, yet they can easily manipulate the physical world such as picking up an object or touching someone else. They never answer as to why they are making these bargains or what they get out of these deals, and each is extremely patient as if they have all the time in the world.
