The War of Brotherhood

Hobgoblins are known to be an evil and ruthless race of monstrous warriors that bring pain and misery to all around them. The Hobgoblins of the Defan tribe were once no different. They would raid the steppes in eastern Paltroy for generations. Most would be against isolated communities such as small fishing villages and mining towns. After several decades of this, new hobgoblin leaders rose to power and came up with a new way to live their lives. If they wanted to be respected, they wouldn’t get it through fear, but with wisdom. The Eastern Steppes were far from the main Paltroy civilization, but it would someday expand far enough eastward to present a real threat. The Defan decided to stop raiding and take up farming and fishing instead to feed themselves. They still practiced their martial training, but only for self-defense. After several generations, none of the Defan had raided in over 200 years. During that time, they grew in numbers and began to trade with the locals living in the Yuanto Valley area to create prosperous trading partnerships and true friendships. They made pacts with these locals to come to each other’s aid if either were in need. The Defan had a happy and peaceful life. The peace was not to last as Paltroy expanded their influence eastward to claim the Steppes for themselves. The Defan were willing to cooperate, but when they sent an envoy to negotiate with Paltroy, their envoy was sent back in pieces and thus a war between the Defan Hobgoblins and Paltroy came to be. The Eastern Steppes were on the far frontier of Paltroy and so the full might of Paltroy was never brought to bear on the Defan. True to their word the Yuanto, having a strong martial tradition of their own and an even stronger tradition of honor, went to war against Paltroy as well. The war lasted for decades and the Defan took the brunt of the assault. The Yuanto gathered support from the islanders to the east of the Steppes and so their forces grew. The hobgoblins civilization suffered greatly and were reduced to the inhabitants of a single city named Defan, named after their tribe. Paltroy kept sending wave after wave of reinforcements and even the Shi army of the Yuanto and the elite Bushi warriors of the Eastern islanders could not hold back that inexorable tide much longer. It was with the intervention of the Kellerian Empire that the defending forces were relieved. Unbeknownst to them Paltroy was at war with the Kellerians as well. The Kellerians, seeing an opportunity, sent forces to bolster the defenses of the Yuanto and began to push back the Paltroy military. After two years of getting pushed back, Paltory withdrew to consolidate their remaining Eastern forces and strengthen their flank. Much of the Defan and Yuanto territory was destroyed. Many of the civilians had been pulled back to the Eastern islands. As the threat of Paltroy’s counter attacks was still significant, they decided, the bulk of the population remained there. Most of the population was from Yuanto and many would never see their homes on the mainland again. They formed a new nation, Yuanto and formed strong alliances with both the Defan Hobgoblins and the Kellerian Empire and have maintained those alliances for centuries.
