Ibubesi Flesh Rune carving

The Ibubesi or lionfolk live a life of constant danger and struggle and they would have it no other way. Living in the wildest areas of Tabrua, they constantly strive for greater heights of skill and wish for nothing more than to conquer whatever tasks are set before them. When an Ibubesi decides to leave their tribe to seek out greater challenges, the village shamans perform a Flesh Rune Carving ceremony. A Flesh Rune Carving appears at first glance to be a tattoo that can be on any part of the body and looks like strange geometric patterns.  To perform the ceremony, the aspirant must first fast for seven days subsisting on only water. They spend the seven days meditating and attempting to commune with their ancestor spirits to seek guidance. After the seven days are up, the aspirant is then taken to the shaman's hut where they are to undress and stand before the spiritual leaders. The shamans paint symbols of strength and resilience on the aspirant's face with a special paint made from the fruit and bark of the Tamour Tree. Once that is done, the head shaman then takes a ceremonial blade and begins to cut into the aspirant's flesh to create the Rune Carving. The shaman never knows what Rune Carving they will make as the spirits guide their hands and instruct them on which Carving would be most appropriate. The process is very taxing physically on the aspirant and blood loss is prodigious. In order for the ceremony to be a success, the aspirant must remain upright, conscious and not cry out in pain. To do any of these things would anger the spirits and they would consume the life force of the aspirant on the spot. When a Flesh Rune Carving is finished, the spirits enter the aspirant, and they are given abilities depending on the Carving. There are many different Flesh Rune Carvings that do many different things. The Clear Mind Carving makes the bearer impervious to any magic or affect that would attempt to charm them or control their minds.  The Stone Body Carving makes them highly resistant to physical attacks be it mundane or magical. The Vigorous Carving bestows greater abilities of athletics. They can move much faster than normal and can do so with much less rest than normal. The Flesh Knitter Carving bestows the ability to quickly heal and recover from even grievous wounds. There are many more and on occasion a new carving that not even the shamans know of will be carved. It is possible to receive multiple carvings, but each process can only be done when the shamans are satisfied that the spirits will an aspirant to receive another carving and each time the ceremony is performed, it is at great peril to the life of the aspirant.
