Elizabeth Anne Jenkins née Thompson

Elizabeth Anne Jenkins (née Thompson) was born on June 5, 1952, in the quiet suburb of Norwood, South Australia. The eldest of three children, Elizabeth grew up in a loving, working-class family that valued education and community service. Her father, Robert Thompson (born 1925), worked as a postal worker, while her mother, Margaret (née Wilson, born 1927), was a homemaker who occasionally took on seamstress work to supplement the family income.   As a child, Elizabeth displayed a natural curiosity and a love for learning. She excelled in her studies at Norwood Primary School and later at Marryatville High School, where she developed a passion for literature and teaching. Her nurturing nature and patience were evident from a young age, as she often spent her afternoons helping her younger siblings, Peter (born 1955) and Susan (born 1958), with their homework.   After graduating from high school in 1969, Elizabeth pursued her dream of becoming an educator by enrolling in the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Adelaide. She thrived in the academic environment, earning top marks in her coursework and gaining practical experience through student teaching placements at local primary schools.   It was during her time at university that Elizabeth met her future husband, Thomas Jenkins, a charming and hardworking mechanical engineering student. The couple bonded over their shared values and commitment to making a difference in their community. They married in a simple ceremony at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Adelaide on April 20, 1974, shortly after Elizabeth completed her degree.   Elizabeth began her teaching career in 1974 at Glenelg Primary School, where she quickly earned a reputation as a dedicated and innovative educator. Her warm demeanour and creative lesson plans made her a favourite among students and colleagues alike. In 1980, Elizabeth's leadership potential was recognised, and she was promoted to the position of Year Level Coordinator, a role she held for five years.   As her career progressed, Elizabeth took on new challenges and responsibilities. In 1985, she accepted a position as Assistant Principal at Brighton Primary School, where she played a key role in shaping school policies and supporting the professional development of staff members. Her commitment to fostering an inclusive and nurturing learning environment earned her the respect and admiration of the school community.   Throughout this time, Elizabeth and Thomas welcomed three children into their lives: Karl (born November 15, 1975), Jessica (born September 3, 1978), and Daniel (born February 28, 1982). Despite the demands of balancing her career and family life, Elizabeth remained a devoted mother, always making time to support her children's interests and aspirations.   In 1990, Elizabeth's dedication and leadership skills led to her appointment as Principal of Blackwood Primary School. During her decade-long tenure, she implemented innovative educational programs, forged strong partnerships with local community organisations, and championed initiatives to promote student well-being and academic success. Under her guidance, Blackwood Primary School gained recognition as one of the top-performing schools in the region.   Seeking to make a broader impact on education in South Australia, Elizabeth transitioned into the role of Educational Consultant for the South Australian Department for Education in 2000. In this capacity, she provided guidance and support to schools across the state, sharing her expertise in curriculum development, instructional strategies, and school leadership. Her contributions to education policy at the state level earned her widespread acclaim and cemented her status as a respected figure in the field.   In 2010, Elizabeth's alma mater, the University of Adelaide, recognised her outstanding contributions to education by offering her a position as a Professor of Education. Embracing this new challenge, Elizabeth now dedicates her time to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting research on effective pedagogical practices, and mentoring the next generation of educators.   Throughout her illustrious career, Elizabeth has remained committed to her family and community. She is a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, cherishing the time she spends with her loved ones. Her unwavering support and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the lives of her children, particularly her eldest son, Karl, who followed in his grandfather's footsteps by pursuing a career in law enforcement.
