Sehr Bahor Settlement in City of Ten Thousand Daggers | World Anvil

Sehr Bahor

Sehr Bahor is a plane or pocket dimension that sits, according to most accounts, at the very center of all creation. All of the magic in the multiverse flows from Sehr Bahor at the direction of Sehruh, Keeper of the Well. Belief in Sehr Bahor is part of the tradition of ancient and near-universal cosmology of Noma-Lum whose players operate on a scale that is barely comprehensible even to the gods of humankind.

Demographics

The sole inhabitant of Sehr Bahor is Sehruh,  the Keeper of the Well, whose name simply means "The Sorcerer." Sehruh is a cosmic being whose duties are to guard the well and guide the flow of magic throughout the cosmos. This includes meting out the Ruh that forms the spark of life in most creatures and fuels human magic.   The quantity of Ruh allocated to each creature and the elemental gateway through which the energy must pass was set down by Destiny at the beginning of time in a book written in a language that only Sehruh can read. When a new life takes form, Sehruh draws magical energy from the well and fires it from his fingertips toward the decreed elemental gateway. According to many cultures, the elemental plane through which a person's ruh passes holds influence over their life and destiny. (see Elemental Essence ).

Defences

Sehr Bahor is isolated from the Astral Plane , and even the magic that flows from the source travels first through one of the elemental planes before making its way out into the wider universe. This arrangement is often cited as the reason that many consider elementalism to be the lowest and most primitive form of magic. The only gateways to Sehr Bahor are located on the elemental planes, traditionally in the throne rooms or inner sanctums of the elemental rulers of these domains. In order to travel to the source of all magic, you must either defeat one of the most powerful elementals in the multiverse (and whatever guardians watch over them) or persuade them that letting you use their portal will not trigger some existential consequence known only to Destiny.

History

Sehr Bahor has existed since the dawn of creation, and in some accounts is the source of all things in the cosmos. While there are many tales of people who died or went mad attempting to find their way to the Well of Magic, The Eternal Empress is believed to be the only visitor to ever reach Sehruh's tower. Kyra undertook the journey in order to restore the magical energy that she expended when she gave birth to the world. According to some accounts, she somehow convinced The Sorcerer to allow her to drink from the well. In other accounts, Sehruh could not allow her to drink from the well. Instead, he made her a guest at his tower, where ambient magic resulting from proximity to the Source allowed her to regain her strength much faster than she would have even in the celestial realm of the gods.
Sometime after returning from Sehr Bahor, Kyra gave birth to Hulya the Dreamweaver. Whether the dream goddess was brought into being by the Empress drinking from the well, the strong magical energies of the place, or a night of passion between Kyra and Sehruh varies from one version of the story to the next.

Points of interest

Most of Sehr-Bahor exists in a constant state of flux with the landscape, inhabitants, and fundamental laws of reality changing frequently according to the whims of the chaotic winds of magical energy that swirl across the realm. The only point of stability and relative normalcy is the small, grassy hill on which the well itself and the tower of Sehruh stand. The magical energy that flows from the well is so powerful that it will instantly destroy any mortal who comes into contact with it unless they have been placed under certain protective spells known only to Sehruh.

Geography

The bulk of Sehr Bahor is a dreamscape of wild magic unrestrained by the laws of logic or physics. The landscape, the creatures, and even the extraplanar bodies of the travelers themselves frequently shift form, so that the journey to the center of the plane could at any moment be slowed to a crawl by the sudden appearance of a syrup swamp, a roving gang of surly alligators with switchblades, a one-eyed jack-in-the-box who talks like Tom Waits and won't let you pass until you solve his riddle, or the traveler's own sudden, inexplicable, and hopefully temporary transformation into a lovely floral-patterned teacup. The sheer weirdness of the place is enough to drive even the gods themselves mad. The only constant is the frequent sight of bolts of magical energy streaking through the sky in every direction from some point in the center of the world.
