Chronicles of Solia

The Year is 1593

Scope

The motivation behind building Chronicles of Solia

Primarily, I am creating the world to provide a setting for my tabletop games. I also use the setting to explore the concept that good and evil are simply extreme ends of a spectrum and that reality exists with the shades of grey and the conflict between belief versus religion.   The world of Solia has been in various stages of development since the fall of 1993, undergoing numerous revisions, at one point having been scrapped entirely and restarted after the loss of multiple records. Posting Solia to World Anvil allows for a digital backup of the wealth of material I have developed.

The goal of the project

Solia is initially created for the players in my tabletop game. Pending removal of intellectual property used under Community Use doctrine, the setting is to be considered Personal Use (Non-Commercial).

Theme

Genre

The overarching genre of Solia is Fantasy. Various regions encapsulate High Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, and Horror. Most of Solia is Medieval or Early Rennaisance levels of technology. Gunpowder exists, but is highly-regulated, so canons and firearms are rare. Certain regions have steam technology, while others utilize whale oil and similar combustibles for energy.

Reader Tone

While I have not settled on a consistent mood for the world, I write from a neutral theme. Certain areas and themes range from neutral to dark, while other portions may contain humorous moods (see the Golai ethnicity Chuhkdahg).

Recurring Themes

Using the literary definition of conflict, Solia presents Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Man, and Man vs. Self. Within the setting, there is a conflict of the natural vs. the supernatural and conflicts between geopolitical entities, species, and religious organizations.   Moral and ethical "shades of grey" is a predominant theme, while the recurring theme of duality and dichotomy surfaces in my writing species and ethnic groups. I believe that not all monsters are inherently evil, and not all "civilized" species are inherently good.

Character Agency

I write the world to be explored, with the concepts of kingdom and empire building in mind, and the idea that Agency and Action overcome destiny.
