The Blight Burners
Blight burners, or simply called Burners, where a vital profession during the latter years of The Fall and the decade or two following its end. They were used to cleanse the lands from Blight and the infected Blighted. However their role has drastically diminished since then as the blight is now mostly gone from inhabited places in Hysal, except in The ruins of Carathenga.
Career
Qualifications
To become a blight burner, one must absolutely be a Firemage, as they are the only people that can completely get rid of a Blight or an infected person with The Blight as the illness and growth can only be killed with fire. However, that is not to say other mages and even non-magic users couldn't help, but they simply did not fill the most vital roles, and instead simply acted as support for the firemages. Usually these individuals were already mage mercenaries or high raking soldiers.
Payment & Reimbursement
Burners would usually payed and/or compensated by their guild or whatever kingdom/state hired them.
Other Benefits
The population who saw them work really appreciated them because they saw how important their work was. As a result, they were praised everywhere and very famous.
Perception
Purpose
Their primary job was to kill any Blighted person they could find, while also limiting the risk to civilians. Their secondary objective was to burn as much of the blight as they could and/or help regular people doing it also and to generally avoid the further spread of the Blight.
Social Status
It is generally seen as a relic of the past. Relics of a time were humanity was in real danger, which is not the case anymore, and are therefore relegated to the margins of society.
History
During The Fall, this profession was the most in demand out of any magic profession and it even lead to the creation of numerous Guilds to manage all the demand. The Guild of Nahldan was created during that time and is the only remaining guild for that purpose.
Operations
Dangers & Hazards
While out in the field doing the job, there is always the change that they could get infected by the blight, although they are very slim now, thanks to a better understanding of the illness and the progress in the development of protective measures against the illness.
