Shadestone
Shadestone is a hard, igneous rock found in very rare deposits around active, dormant or extinct volcanos. Because of its rarity and the extreme environment its usually found in, it is one of the rarest materials a person can acquire.
Properties
Material Characteristics
The rocks are dense, heavy and its surface is darker than ink, obsidian or coal. The rock does not reflect any light.
Geology & Geography
The largest known deposits are found in Osian, in two separate areas. The first and largest one is within the Thiber plateau. The other region is north of Nan-Tao, in the Kingdom of Bashra and the Kingdom of Tokan
Other smaller deposits are found in Enask, on the Island of Lassin and in the vekhoman Mountains of north-western Arros. No known deposits have been found in Samaria or Viuzhul, although one deposit near the massive Toxasis volcano of eastern Mahador, near the Sea of Storms is hypothesized based on old descriptions by locals and Arrosian explorers. However, since its last eruption, most of the volcano now lays underwater, safe for a small island and the borders of the crater and the The perpetual storms around the old volcano makes accessing the area all but impossible.
Life & Expiration
The material does not deteriorate or expire in anyway. However, it is subject to erosion, just like any other rock.
History & Usage
Everyday use
Shadestone is mainly used to dampen the ability and strength of Lightmages. This works because the material can absorb a large quantity of light while not reflecting any. It is widely known that, unlike steel which affects every mage negatively, Shadestone is the only material that can effectively stop most abilities from Lightmages.
It was also found that, when worn by shadowmages as a talisman, it augments the power of their abilities. Since Shadowmages are now extinct and were extremely rare before, not much is known about the degree of effect such a talisman had over them. However some old sources state that Shadestone was extremely dangerous in the hands of a Shadowmages but none state exactly why that is the case.
Cultural Significance and Usage
In Solianist Darnia, At the end of the Summer Solstice Festival, people would gather in their local temple, where the local Paran, or priest, would take a small piece of Shadestone, and crush it under a silver tipped ceremonial hammer. This ritual symbolises that Light always wins over Darkness and therefore Saol, their god of Light, will always win over Uxal, their God of Darkness.
Manufacturing & Products
Shadestone can be easily scultped into a durable talisman using regular stone working tools.
