Session 6: We found a boomstick.

Cody "Duldar"

General Summary

After killing those big wolves, we took a short rest. Valstrax commissioned a helmet made out of one of the wolf’s heads of one of the elven brothers, he wanted to give it to Rodney, one of the other caravan guards. That does sound like a very intimidating helmet, I have to remember that for a future project. After the rest, we continued on our journey.   The road took us closer to the sea, the hills on the sea side made way for a beach. Valstrax called us all to the sea side, as he saw something move on the beach. When we got closer, they turned out to be crocodiles. They were leaving us alone, but we decided to guard the caravan while it past them, just in case. Suddenly, something jumped out of the water and charged at the caravan. It looked like some sort of floating snake, but something about the space around it seemed weird. Some slashed with our weapons caused the space around the creature to bleed, it seemed the creature was bigger than it looked. Valstrax was able wrap around the creature and bite it, apparently hitting a major artery because the thing sprayed out a lot of blood and died. At closer inspection, Janey remembered her mother talk about one of these creatures, apparently it was some kind of see through crocodile. This feature makes them experts at sneaking up on prey at the waters edge. Lucky for us that we didn’t encounter it in the water. The other crocodiles left us alone and we could continue on.   Further down the road, I spotted something strange. A mound of dirt seemed to be moving towards us on the road. I called for the caravan to stop and called rest to the front. I asked whether our guide had any idea what this could be, he didn’t, but the it was damaging the road, which could be problematic. We decided to try and stop it before it could get to the carts. Valstrax was able to hit whatever it was with an arrow, then suddenly the mound split up in three smaller ones, one with an arrow sticking out. Janey caused tremors around the mounds to try and flush them out of the ground, but that didn’t seem to help. Two mounds seemed to disappear, while the mound with the arrow moved towards Valstrax. Valstrax seemed to get bit by something from the ground, after which the mound turned into a man-sized hole. The creature seems to be moving underground. Rodney jumped into the hole to hit the creature, from the sounds of it, he did. Valstrax suspected that the creature was planning to attack him from behind, so he decided to hit the ground behind him to try and damage it, Glennis did the same. Seeing that both of them were hitting that specific part of the ground, I did the same. The creature didn’t like all these attacks from above, so it attacked me. It didn’t get through my armour; in fact, it got its teeth stuck in my boots. It was a furry creature with a long snout, tentacles seemed to sprout from it. One of the other creatures emerged next to Brynn and attacked him. The creature attacking me emerged from the ground and attacked us once more, but Janey shot a firebolt at it, which blew it up. There were two creatures left, one underground and one attacking Brynn. Valstrax went to help Brynn. The other creature burst out of the ground next to Glennis, and hurt her pretty badly, I went to heal her. Meanwhile, Rodney found his way out of the creature’s tunnel and went to help Glennis and I. With Rodney, Glennis and I getting a few good hits in, Janey was able to kill this creature with another firebolt, it caused it to explode just as the other one. Turning back to see how the others were doing, I saw that they had already defeated it. The corpse seemed to have most of its contents squeezed out of it.   After the battle, we decided to take a short rest to recuperate a little. We were a little hungry, so Valstrax offered to cook for us. While I have never eaten cat before, it was surprisingly tasty, I wouldn’t mind eating some more in the future. It was getting late, so we decided to find a place to spend the night. We were in the middle of nowhere, so we had to camp out in the wild. Our guide found a cave close by where we could setup camp in front of. We setup camp and warmed ourselves at the campfire.   Brynn approached me with an idea, he wanted to use his whisky to create a fire bomb. A preposterous idea if ever I heard one! Alcohol is for consumption, not weapons! If you want people to light up at your command, you learn how to do that with magic. Brynn persisted however, offering my two bottles if I created one for him. Two bottles of whisky, liberated from a person who obviously didn’t know how to appreciate them, I couldn’t pass up on that. I had read about gnomes experimenting with something like that once. They are inquisitive creatures, but just as strange. I tried to replicate what I had read; remove some alcohol from the bottle and put a cloth in it for lighting. I handed it to Brynn, and he handed me two bottles. I hope that whisky doesn’t go to waste.   During the night, we had a rotating guard duty starting with Valstrax. Nothing of interest happened his watch. He woke me up for the second guard duty. I didn’t trust the cave we were camping next to, so I decided to watch it at the entrance, though nothing happened during my watch either. I woke up Brynn for his turn and went to bed.   I woke up to the sound of commotion outside. I called out to find out what was going on, we were being attacked! I took my hammer and shield and stepped out of the cart. Janey was still sleeping at the fire, so I ran to her to wake her up. Suddenly there was a bang and a flash, and I got hit pretty badly by something. It seemed to have come from a creature behind one of the carts, I moved to attack together with Rodney and Janey. When we got close, they looked to be big humans with strange heads. While Brynn and Valstrax were taking care of the creature further away, the rest of us focussed on the creature close by. Janey got the final blow on him by piercing his neck with one of the branches of the fireplace. Seeing that his friend was dead, the other creature threw some kind of object at us. When it hit the ground, it exploded, severely hurting most of us. I was lucky I had my shield with me, since I could use it to cover myself from the blast. Another one of those would be bad, so I decided to help Valstrax with killing the last creature before it could do it again. Brynn was hit pretty badly and was bleeding out on the ground besides Valstrax. My hammer blow almost broke the creature’s neck, Valstrax twisted it the rest of the way, decapitating it.   After we had stabilized and healed all of the that went down in the fight, we took a look at the creatures. They had a human body but of a bigger scale and with the head of a hippo. The weapons that they used were strange, one was a long stick with two protrusions on one side and a hole on the other side. The other looked about the same but was much shorter. They also carried small metal pellets with them and a substance that smelled like sulphur. Could these have been the weapons that had caused the bangs and flashes? We might want to do some research into that. But that all had to wait, as it was still the middle of the night. We went back to bed while the guard cycle continued.
