Session 40 – Finding Mothalden

General Summary

You spend the evening of the 5th of Secondus Mensis packing and getting ready to depart in the morning directly after breakfast. During that time you get to know a bit more about your new acquaintance Angmar Wheatflow. Not only is she an operative of the Cobalt Soul  but one of her specific areas of assignment when at the Monastery is guarding the Catalogus Artium. She is happy to share whatever knowledge is can, now that she has heard of your mission and journey. She offers her apologies to Feebs regarding her acute allergy to goblins but advises that at a distance of about fifteen feet or more she does not experience any symptoms.

You depart on the morning of the 6th of Secondus Mensis and the first full day is surprisingly uneventful, which actually puts Mutaa on edge as he feels like it is a bad omen that there was absolutely no sign of bandits nor creatures for an entire day’s worth of travel

On the morning of the 7th of Secondus Mensis, after breakfast you hear Mutaa uncharitistically angry and swearing. He informs you that the new caravan worker, his nephew Saamee somehow loaded four empty water barrels, meaning that there is only half as much water as there should be. Hopefully you will find an oasis soon or he will have to start rationing water soon than normal, starting with Saamee.

You get underway but it is not long before you are accosted by three would be raiders, but they are quickly dealt with. During the fight you are especially impressed with Angmar’s skills and are quite surprised that she evidently carries no weapons but is deadly with her empty hands.

Past midday, you come upon a troubling sight. Feebs from his position atop the lead vardo, catches glimpse of what at first appears to be a wrecked wagon ahead. But as you grow closer you discover the gruesome aftermath of a caravan that was clearly raided by a superior force. The remains of the Uthran Parash‑Sahir Caravan and Shipping Company, and its entire complement of personel and passengers is strewn across the road and on both sides. The only vehicle not turned over is the yellow and brown vardo but even it has two of its four wheels broken beyond repair.

You begin investigating the wreckage as Feebs leads the way with detect magic active just in case. Alas, the carnage causes him to become physically ill as he vomits profusely at the sight of the blood and gore that has been rotting in the sun for awhile and has been picked over by vultures and other carrion creatures.

Angmar joins Sylbella as Feebs falls back and as they approach the wrecked vardo Sylbella thinks she hears someone or something moaning within. She calls out but there is no answer so she cautiously enters to find there is a body slightly hidden toward the back. As she moves debris to the side she discovers the last person she ever expected to find here – Mothalden!

He is alive but severely injured so she carries him out of the wrecked vardo back to one of the vardos in their own caravan. After a brief discussion about what to do with him (Gunkyn even suggests just leaving him here but Sylbella wants to integrate him) the decision is made to tie him up then heal him, just enough to revive him. Once Mothalden is secured Sylbella casts healing word on him. As he comes to, he at first is elated to be alive but as he realizes he is bound and looks up at the faces of Gunkyn, Feebs, and Sylbella the expression on his face is that of abject terror!
