Session 30 – We Need A Ride

General Summary

You awaken on what is the 25th day of Primus Mensis in the year 1500 CE. You partake of the porridge and bread provided for breakfast but eat hastily, knowing that you need to find passage to the Library of the Cobalt Soul as soon as possible, as well as find a way to contact the Bright Queen.

Gikhesh suggests that the north gate would be the best place to look for passage since that would be the direction of travel to the Library. Heading in that general direction, you stop at an arcane shop so that Feebs can acquire a spell scroll of Sending and the necessary materials to copy it to his spellbook.

At the north gate you see the sign for Jewel of the Desert Shipping and Caravan Company, which is owned and operated by a tall, dark-skinned, and quite charismatic human male named Muuta ibn Ha’an.

He quotes you a price of five electrum pieces per person per day and boasts the most comfortable vardos in all of Xanathar City . While discussing the price among yourselves, Muuta then interjects with an offer – he is in need of additional assistants and guards for his next trip to the Kobalt Soul and proposes that if you act in this capacity, then he would consider it an even trade of labor in exchange for transportation. You agree and also offered the use of his stables as a place to sleep until the caravan leaves on or about the 27th or 28th of the month.

With passage now secure, Feebs spends the remainder of the day copying and learning the spell, Sending. The next day he uses it the maximum number of times possible for a wizard of his abilities to contact Sylbella’s uncle, his mentor Sylonidis, and of course Queen Leylas Krynn.

The Queen’s reply expresses relief that they are well but also conveys that Gikesh is needed back at court as quickly as possible. And so, you provide the good sergeant with a thousand gold pieces and he departs for the docks to secure passage back to the Krynn Dynasty.

While returning to the caravan’s livery, though you have two odd encounters. The first is when a passerby calls out, “Gunkyn!? Is that really you?” But then exclaims, “NO, you’re not him but I remember seeing you play with him once. What are you doing back here? I thought for sure you’d been banished! Anyway, good seeing you again!” before scampering off.

This of course causes Gunkyn to realize, since he has no memory of ever having been here, that perhaps he should use disguise self to make sure no one else recognizes him from his past, since apparently that could be a bad thing.

Shortly after that incident, Feebs hears a voice that sends a shiver down his spine, “Well I’ll be dammed! Is that you Feebs? How the hell did you get here?” Turning he sees, Kraq, his nemesis and constant bully from his home village. Only now Kraq is in the company of several large orcs, something Feebs finds appalling since it was orcs that destroyed their village.

Both Gunkyn and Feebs proceed with insulting Kraq to the point that he and orc buddies attack. Oddly enough, no city guards intervene, as there are none and the obvious faction members see the fight as an opportunity to place bets on the outcome.

Kraq is the first one killed in the fray, which strike the orcs as funny until Gunkyn also kills one of them. However, their hubris seems their undoing as they all go down fairly quickly and to a combination of both loud cheers from the gathered crowd and much swearing no doubt by those that had bet against you. Many people approach you with congratulations and admonishments that you could make much coin in the arena but you instead retreat as quickly as possible toward the north gate and away from the crowds.

* The long span between sessions 29 and 30 as well as between sessions 30 and 31 is due to the DM needing a break, for one, and also time to brainstorm the next major campaign segment. Also, life happens and adulting has to be done so sometimes the best laid plans to play D&D get sidetracked and changed. The time was used to play a DM-less game called Domain of the Deathless King by Archmage Press.
