Naming Traditions

Croaklin names are a series of two to four syllables, with the vowels stretched. Family lines often begin their names with the same beginning sound. There do not appear to be gender preferences unless the Croaklin are living in an Eyan city and copying local trends.

Average Technological Level

Tool builders, croakin work in wood, soft metals, stone, shell, plant fiber, and found materials. Croaklin make architecture, furniture, compound bows, drums, jewelry, and art.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Throaty language with specialized vocabulary and highly developed throat singing. Vowels have two sounds, whether inhaled or exhaled. Rs are rolled: a throat vibration. The Croaklin have sounds that do not exist in the eyan language and are on the edge of eyan hearing, making Croaklin difficult for Eyan to learn.

Common Dress Code

Croaklin in forests, marshes, and swamps wear little clothing, and what they wear is loose or held on with practical leather or cloth straps. Croaklin near or in Eyan towns wear more, often cut from common local fabrics, but never restrict their legs or hands.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

The high-point of any croakin celebration is the throat singing while drumming by jumping on hand-crafted instruments made of wood, plant-fiber skins, and wax.

Marriage is celebrated with the Heart Beat song, where the couple beat out an increasingly intense heartbeat on the drums while singing about their love and commitment.

War for Croaklin starts with the beating of their feet in the trees as if the whole world reverberates with drums, at once raising their moral and frightening their enemies.

Coastal croaklin fight an annual war against the gulls, the meanest but not the smartest of Lord Water’s creations.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Friendships a-plenty. Especially large, rideable races. Except avians. Birds think croaklin are tasty.
