Akashic Link

Also known as a memocron, this is one of the rarest artifacts in existence. It takes incredibly intricate knowledge of magic, technology, and craftsmanship to make, and no lesser skills in order to use. In essence, its purpose is to store memories, so that they can be accessed long after their owner has passed away.   These devices work by channelling arcane energy to open a link directly to the Akashic Records... hence their original name. The intricate patterns on the side are unique for each Link, and they must be, because they are geometric leylines that direct the energy to the right section of the Records, in order to access the desired memories. Furthermore, the construction of a memocron requires understanding of higher dimensions. They are constructed as folded shadows of four-dimensional regular polyhedra, and the carvings on the side unfold into proper directional vectors only once projected into four dimensions.   To use a memocron, one must channel great amounts of arcane energy directly into the device, in order to cause it to unfold and establish the link. The amount required depends on how big the section encoded into the memocron is and grows exponentially the more memory has to be accessed. When a memocron is activated, the energy that the user is channelling projects their consciousness into that section of the Akashic Records. The process is strenuous on the mind and quite overwhelming - it's a full sensory immersion directly into the experiences of another being. The mind cannot trivially hold onto the memories of another, it's a process that requires a great presence of mind and willpower. Because of this, a memocron is best explored bit by bit, in small chunks, otherwise the user won't be able to hold onto the information they accessed after they are done using the device. A memocron can be - and more often that not is - accessed by multiple people at the same time. Everyone channelling the required energy to activate it shares in the experience and bears equally the sensory overload.   Notably, because of the way it's made and used, the memocron doesn't hold the actual memories within it. Thus destroying one does not permanently delete the records from existence and a skilled enough craftsman could create a new memocron to access those same memories.   Links are rare and powerful artifacts - highly coveted and actively pursued. Because of the nature of their intricacy and expertise required to create one, and the fact that most often they contain memories of their creators, they are sought after for the precious knowledge and experience of their makers. The greatest and richest libraries in the world have but a few, and many a scholar dedicate their lives to accessing and transcribing the knowledge they hold into the more accessible media of the written and spoken word. These people usually work together, and their exclusive society is known as the "Speakers for the Masters", since most memocrons belong to the best and most powerful mages of their time.   Potentially hidden info:
According to the notes left behind by Morgaine, it might be possible to pull memories from the Records permanently into what she called a Reverse Link - a memocron that physically contained that section of the records. No such devices have even been created so far, and she did not write down the method for making one.
