They're naturally an extremely selfish and non-empathic species so any individuals taboos boils down to anything that could negatively effect them. The government pushes a "eat your eggs when you lay them" ideology to combat overpopulation.

History

Before the following: these creatures always engaged in a lot of warfare because, for them, their own populations are very expendable because of how quickly they can grow in number and so any government was fine with flinging away a lot of lives for what we would consider very small gains. Eventually, however, a singular government was able to rise above and conquer (coughs in massacring all the ones that had hatched yet and only allowing those that hadn't hatched before the conquest to join their society and even then as second class citizens whose only hope of getting their children out of being 2nd class was to have those kids with someone who wasn't 2nd class) the others. This government was then very active in trying to get resources from nearby planets, as well as acting with a fair bit of desperation in keeping the population of the species down with various worrying means from introducing Purge Night But Only Murder Is Allowed to sterilizing large portions of populations.

They're able to colonize the planets of their solar system but almost all food production is done on their planet of origin, while the other planets are sources of useful materials to send back to their home planet. They find out that a solar flare is coming for their home planet and try to evacuate as many of their folks as possible to the other planets and make the bases on these planets capable of producing enough food but this doesn't work and ultimately only a few bases continue to exist in the solar system for hundreds of years afterwards because they either didn't receive many refugees or culled most of their populations to be recycled (or used directly) as food with the new agriculture-related upgrades they got. However, these bases slowly fell over time and the species died out due to genetic disorders from inbreeding (each base gets a population of ~200 or so and is culling the children of lower-class families while those in charge keep all their kids alive, reducing genetic variety over the generations and letting genetic disorders stack up), lack of food (as in "oh no a virus just killed the fungi in our farms now we're screwed"), diseases, natural disasters ("oh no that giant tornado outside the base is going to rip it apart and there's nothing we can do about it") and even instances of infighting (imagine a bunk-made explosive going off in such a delicate environment and how badly that can go). Them being able to reproduce so quickly doesn't help with the limited food.
