Saxa Mari - The isles
excerpt from official trade report:
" those Isles are the gateway to our eastern trade options, garrisoning them is out of the question they are too exposed and would be easily blockaded. Rumours to priceless artefacts being obtained by traders on them have proven inconclusive, proceed with caution, there may be a dangerous smuggling operation operating out of the area, although there is no evidence of this at current"
The only landmark in this stretch of ocean is a set of rocky islands. Being a nexus point for several trade routes, a long dead empire built a lighthouse upon them, which is still operational.
The town that has sprung up on the larger islands around the lighthouse are filled with dockyards, fisheries and warehouses. The locals, all being men and women of the sea, few ever having ever seen land that stretches as far as the horizon are deeply superstitious and wary of outsiders who have, despite the constant stream of traders passing through the islands.
The islands were once an independant duchy, however now, similar to Trondheim, they pay little attention to the polotics of the wider world, and are more hassle then they are worth for the world to care for them either except as trade partners.
Notably there are no young children on the islands, and the only elderly folk are priests in the church. All the islands look vaguely middle aged.
