Quetminook

Quetminook is the God of knowledge, progenitor of the goblins, and adopted god of the gnomes. Though he might be absentminded and curious, his understanding of the world is unparalleled. Understanding isn’t his only aim, he changes the rules of reality occasionally, mainly as an experiment to some end of understanding.   Generally shown to be the shortest of any of the gods, Quetminook’s figure is further diminished by his hunch from pouring over research materials. His fingers are usually shown to be ink-stained. He is often in the possession of several books or scrolls. His deep olive-green skin is covered in simple academic robes. He keeps his head bald, a style favored by the goblins as well. He is rarely shown to carry a weapon, but when he is, it is usually a spell, or invented device that is difficult to interpret. His eyes are lightning blue. He may also be shown with coded blue tattoos. Some believe these to be secrets too terrible for mortal eyes. Some think they are reminders to himself. Others doubt their existence.   Quetminook’s single-minded pursuit of the uncovering and creation of knowledge leaves him prone to not thinking things through. Often when asked for knowledge, his answer is convoluted, and he doesn’t think of the ramifications of releasing that knowledge into the world. Fortunately, if he answers at all, it is often in terms that the asker has great difficulty in parsing.

Quetminook’s Influence

Scholars the world over know the power of Quetminook, and worship at his altars and shrines. Those who seek knowledge often end up asking him for that which they search for.   Wizards, artificers, monks, and warlocks often entreat the god for information or knowledge to further their own. This information, or hints at it, are often given without thought to the consequences. He has also bent the rules of reality, harnessing the abundant energies of the world to follow the rules and processes known now as magic.   Others who might turn to this god include hermits, sages, merchants, or investigators. All know the value of information, and anywhere they can find it.

Quetminook’s Goals

Knowledge, the ability to use it, and the bending of reality to create more knowledge are the focuses of Quetminook. He wants to know everything from the secrets of kings to the functioning of the universe, to the first thought of a fish as it emerges from its egg. Using this, he wants to expand his knowledge, furthering the frontiers of his mind. Finally, he is willing and able to change the rules of reality to give himself more to study. To this end, he created magic as it is known today. He tests its limits constantly, but once he tires of these studies, or masters it completely, who knows what he will change next.

Divine Relationships

The god of knowledge is a strange case among the gods. While others further their plots and plans by involving other gods, Quetminook’s standard operating procedure is to work alone. When other gods come to him with a request for help or an offer of a joint operation, he is happy to do so, but he rarely, if ever, does these himself. As such, his relationships are largely one sided. Some suspect that he is saving all of his favors up, waiting for the right moment to cash them all in on a big scheme, but no one has any idea what that might entail.

Worshipping Quetminook

Quetox is the month of Quetminook, and is generally celebrated through study, experimentation, and meditation. Due to the somewhat reclusive nature of the god of knowledge, many of his followers are expected to treat the month in some degree of solitude. The time alone is meant to be spent with few distractions, figuring out puzzles or mysteries. For the truly talented, the month may mean creating them instead for others to figure out. Temples of Quetminook are known to create these throughout the year, with different priests having different specialties. When Quetox comes, they trade them with each other and their congregations. Those who create the most difficult puzzles, the ones that manage to confound even the god, are allowed to ask three questions, which Quetminook will answer honestly and fully to the best of his ability, though he may need time to find the information.   Quetminook is also worshipped through offerings of obscure knowledge, hidden secrets, or ancient artifacts. Sometimes, when Quetminook has finished with it, it may be returned, though there is no guarantee. If it is unique or interesting enough, he may keep it for his personal collection.

Aspects of Quetminook

The gods often represent more than one facet. The gods’ facets are defined by their worshippers, so that the gods suit the needs of the people. No aspect is ever gone, however, and any facet that was created in the past still lurks somewhere in the god’s personality, waiting for when it is needed again, or perhaps plotting a situation that might make it relevant once more.   Due to the large number of people that want knowledge, Quetminook is a popular god. However, most of his power goes into his experiments and projects. His aspects are some of the most synergistic of any gods’, meaning that they tend not to get in each other’s ways, and ensuring that they are pointed in common directions.

Aspect of the Goblins

While this is the eldest of Quetminook’s aspects, its desire for self-sufficiency and autonomy for the goblins left it as a weaker aspect, especially when compared to aspects of other gods concerned with their races. The Goblin’s view of Goblins caused many of them to go feral, resulting in a poor reputation for the race.

Aspect of Intelligence

This aspect values intelligence everywhere. Quetminook’s allies, enemies, and those who are neutral to him are all appreciated for their cunning and smarts by The Intelligent. Worshipped by scholars and the highly educated, this aspect is Quetminook’s most powerful aspect. It wants people to be smarter, hopes that a world full of people who are curious and inquisitive may bring an end or a lessening to conflict.

Aspect of the Puzzle

The Puzzle often seals away important information to be used as prizes for its tests of mortals. It works to test the limits of mortal mental capacity, showing many that they are smarter than they gave themselves credit for, while majorly humbling others. This aspect is worshipped by those who enjoy puzzle in all their forms, including riddles and mysteries. Investigators also pay respect to The Puzzle for help in unravelling cases.

Aspect of Magic

The Magician is believed to be the first and only aspect to date to be created by a god themselves. When Quetminook set into reality the rules for magic, he created a new aspect of himself to study their interactions. Those who use magic often pray to The Magician for further understanding, power, or for thanks. This aspect has become the second strongest of all of Quetminook’s aspects. It continues to be impressed by the interactions of magic, and the ways that mortals use this tool.

Aspect of Learning

This aspect is concerned with the spread of information, and the preservation of knowledge for the future. The Learner is popular in institutions of learning at all levels. It rewards the insatiable, those who want to know everything, and refuse to accept that there are things beyond their comprehension. This is a strong aspect when measured against aspects of other gods, but amongst Quetminook’s aspects, it is minor.

Aspect of Discovery

Where The Learner is concerned with the spread of established information, The Discoverer is interested in new knowledge. Whether it is discoveries of the past, pushing the boundaries of science or magic, or self-discovery, The Discoverer is interested. No matter the source, he is interested in new information.

Aspect of Solitude

One of the strongest aspects, no one is sure where this aspect draws power from. No matter the source, however, it influences the god to remain on his own for the most part, in order to better focus on the current object of his obsession.

Aspect of the Truth

The Truth hates lies, obfuscation, and subterfuge. It wants the truth, no matter how ugly or messy, to be on display and to be accessible to all freely. A strong aspect, his counsel is sought by paladins, judges, and other truth seekers to help clear waters muddied by those with something to gain by hiding the truth.

Aspect of the Gnomes

The Gnome is a new aspect, created by a race who saw the god of inventors and wanted to make him their own. Due to the growing race, it is gaining strength, and supplies the gnomes with more knowledge. It has influenced the Puzzle to send more their way, The Discoverer to see the Gnomes’ worth, and many other aspects to invest interest and time with the race that is slowly winning their brutal war.
