Batreene Riverlands
Separating Harkinmont and the Goldengrass Plains, the Batrine River flows through here. It starts in an inland lake of saltwater, south of the mountains that keep Polomis sequestered. It runs south, where the saltwater is diluted by more and more sources of freshwater. By the time it reaches the Elven border, it is really freshwater with an unusual salinity. Here, it keeps gathering more water while its surroundings are colored a very lush green. While the river eventually empties out into Scalebright Lake, the riverlands themselves end at the Marsh of Many Scales.
The Batreene river is not the only one in the area. It is fed by an extensive network of tributaries from across the riverlands named after it. In some places, it even pools into small lakes and ponds. All of the water, especially when combined with the rich soil from minerals pulled off of the elven mountains, creates a truly healthy environment positively teeming with life of every variety.
Due to the Batreene River's origin in Riflian, it experiences great thermal changes based on season. The brackish qualities of the river keep it from freezing in all but the harshest winters. Many of its tributaries do succumb to seasonal freezing, however, leading the river to have highly seasonal river volume. In the summer, after heavy rains, it might overflow its banks, but in the winter, it might be little more than a sluggish trickle along the riverbed.
The riverlands are considered the ancestral homelands for many types of nomatic biethtíre tribes. The riverlands across chenravo are largely viewed as the lands of those who follow Jakular. Given taht his religion lacks structure, the riverlands also function in this way. No soveriegn nation lays claim to them, but they are nurtured, cultivated, and protected by those who pray to the god of life. Along the river proper, there are also water genasi and, due to the proximity to the Marsh of Many Scales, lizardfolk and tortles. While there is certianly tension between different groups, the area has managed to stay one of the most peaceful areas in Chenravo.
Geography
While the Batreene Riverlands have meen known to have some hills, none of them are anything major. The river itself snakes around most of them as it wends its way south. Along its tributaries, there are a collection of ponds and lakes that serve as breeding grounds for aquatic wildlife.
Ecosystem
Given the different levels of salinity in the river at different points, as well as the temperature differences as it moves south, groups of fish that live in the river tend to stay in the same general area. While there are a few kinds that can be found and move along the entire river, they are exceptions to the rule.
Dispite the number of people living in the riverlands, there is little agriculture. Most of the culture here revolves around a hunter gatherer lifestyle. If times are lean, many of the tribes turn to trade in order to stay fed.
