Stonebark Tree

The Stonebark is a devil of a tree to cut. First you gotta take a pick to it to break away the stoney bark. Trying to just take an axe or saw to it straight away just ruins your tools. Once the wood is exposed, then you can start to cut it down. Still, the wood is very hard and dulls axes and saws, so about half the time someone is sharpening them or you have back up tools while yer felling the thing. Then the same goes for trimming off branches. Even these have value for many uses however, so that helps make it worthwhile collecting the slash, especially when you get one with rainbow wood. The one thing they don't lend themselves to is building a fire. The sticks don't even start unless you have a good blaze to begin with.

Stonebark is a temperate wet region tree that reaches a height of approximately 15 meters. The tree is found throughout the Kuan region in taiga and mountain valleys. It is characterized by a thick stoney bark and wood infused with minerals that make it exceptionally strong, and resistant to both fire and insects. The light sandy wood may develop an opalescent shine when polished and such timbers demand a higher price, as much as ten times more than standard timbers of the tree that shine or sparkle from small mineral deposits within the wood. Stonebark wood in general commands prices well above other wood.
The qualities of stonebark make it an excellent construction material and a desirable decorative element in buildings or use for carved statues and ornamentation. The cost tends to limit use in ship construction to the keel and basic frame, though the wood has excellent water resistance as well. The Emperor's warship "Sea Dragon" is built predominantly of Stonebark in frame and surface wood. It shines and sparkles gloriously in the sunlight, inspiring our navy and bringing fear to opponents. The ship turns aside fire and deflects arrows as if sided in iron.

I would also imagine the rigidity of a tree like this would make it hard to bend it for ships. This gives wonderful visual flair to how imagine rich people's houses to look. A stonebark table may also be passed down through generations, making it show up where you may not expect it. Maybe even a sword hilt made of it, or an entire spear that is both ornamental and functional! So many ideas can come from this!
