Aimyla The floating city

One of the great wonders is the floating city of Aimyla in the Fae Commonwealth. The city is a floating mountain south of the Llaughedriat range that rises above the grassy plain. The upside down pyramid hovers over the pit from which it rose up. The city floats 20 to 30 meters above the ground at the edges of the ravine, held aloft by accumulations of Blue Arcane crystal in the stone.  It is held in place by 5 great chains on wheels in fortified towers that allow it to be raised or lowered and prevents it from drifting away.  Drawbridges are lowered  when the city is pulled lower in the day. These allow entry and exit and transport of goods.

Demographics

The city is a Fae city majority with a fair number of Satyr.  Humans form about 20% of the population, mostly Esereti derivation lower classes.  A small number of Minotaur and Centaur are resident, mostly as traders and merchants.

Government

The city is ruled by the Sealie Court Marquessa Lu Chao, an Emeritus Sluagh, Viceroy of Summer, Thane of the Zyphir clan of Air and her consort Ur-Marquis Shu Lee, Prefect Sluagh, ur-Sharif of Spring, Reeve of Leprech clan of Fire. They rule the Aimyla Court of Whispers. The Marquissa is 76 years old and an image of summer wind, weathered and dark skinned with white hair and blue eyes. Her consort only 51 and is orange-red haired, white skinned and has eyes of grey. They have two daughters, Zhu who is Air and Zephir while opposite her parents in Winter, and Kao who is Leprecht of Summer. They also have a ward adopted son, a wood Satyr of Winter - Ke Hsu-Huo who is ransom for the good behavior of the Winter court Khedive of Umelumeri, near the border of Peransaar, the realms of the Lizardkings to the West.

Defences

The city has three rings of walls before the main citadel. It is also floating high in the air.  This makes it very hard to attack aside from with rare airborne forces.  The Fae don't worry too much about attack on the Chain houses as the city can be pulled back to place if it is set adrift. Though there is talk that it might be desirable to have a coastal location and view.

Infrastructure

The city is supplied with water from fountains and pools of elemental enchantment, and elementals patrol the waters to keep them fresh and clean.  The streets are swept by wind from air elemental enchantments and the whirlwinds can be seen swirling along the streets and avenues sweeping away debris. The streets are paved and tree lined with fragrant flowers and fruits. There is a sewer system that ends in a pit with no known outflow, said to empty into the great emptiness of the Rift beyond the edge of the world but is more likely going to some fae realm in the Dreaming.   Related to this are the Passages:  in several parts of the city are Jade arches which transverse the Mists to link to other Passage arches.  They are Guarded by Troll warriors and worked by the guild of Passage Keepers for a cost of just 1 brass.

History

The crystal deposits had existed under the city, but Dwarven creations refined, focused and made them both active and undrained. The City must pay the Dwarves yearly for their creations or the enchanted creations will fail. They have been made for 227 years, and none in the city wish to test the threat, nor to see if it is a sudden or gradual failing.
Meant as a showcase of all the Empire rejected in exiling the Fae, and as a point of invoking envy and curious travelers, the city is laced with several levels of enchantments to add to the wonder: Elemental fed fountains and pools, the fantastical sewer system, wind elemental street sweeping, the passages and several elemental fire fountains.

Tourism

The city was raised with the very idea of creating wonder and tourism. It is held up as as major achievement of the Fae races and is a spot of pride amongst them. The magical wonders make the city even more fantastical and draws the curious and the seekers of the strange and different.

I'm a sucker for anything Fae related and I love the idea of this city. I like the premise of why it was elevated in the first place along with the fact that there is an underlying threat to maintaining it via the Dwarves. I also liked the idea of wind elemental street cleaners.
