The Moirai

Structure

The Moirai are the three sisters of fate. They are:
  • Clotho, the Spinner
  • Lachesis, the Alloter, and
  • Atropos, the Inevitable.
They control the Weave of Fate - sometimes thought to be a golden thread, other times a spider's web. Each string represents the course of an individuals life. Some believe that while their father, Janus, has power over the large strokes of history, the Sisters have the final say over each individual soul. They cannot, however, circumvent free will, but it is said that they provide opportunities, lay down tests, and drive serendipity and misfortune - the latter often putting them at odds with Avandra.

Assets

The Sisters have several allies at their disposal, including:
  • The Valkyries (sometimes called the Keres) who collect those fallen in battle before their time
  • The Erinyes (sometimes called the Furies) who would punish blasphemers or those who transgress against the Weave
  • The Riders (sometimes called the Horseman) who are said to herald the end of days
Some believe that the Moirai are protected by Morpheus, the God of Dreams, as fate and the future are sometimes foreshadowed in dreams. It is also said that - much like their father - the Sisters have the ear of Sphinxes throughout the Material Plane.

Divine Origins

It is said that the sisters are the result of an unholy union of Janus and Lolth. It is said that the Spider Queen tricked the God of Fate into thinking that she was Erathis, the Goddess of Civilization, who Janus was secretly in love with. After learning the truth, Janus shunned the triplets and condemned them to the Underdark where they remain under the protection of their guileful mother. Each of the sisters have the gift of prophecy - much like their father - and are responsible for many prophecies, including the Legend of the Great Toils*.
*This legend is often attributed to the Oracle of Sobek.
