Ramshorn Katun

The ramshorn katun is a type of domesticated Katun that was first bred by pioneering hobgoblin herders in the centuries following the Dwerrin's arrival in Hrashchar.   Named after its huge, curly horns, the ramshorn is the biggest working breed of katun and is now common across Hrashchar. While machinery has taken over some aspects of farming across the continent, most farmers still appreciate having a handful of ramshorns around for ploughing smaller fields, recreational riding and, increasingly, specialised power generators connected to a large treadmill.   Away from the plains of the Northern Steppe and Hrashchar savannah, ramshorn katun are also popular as beasts of burden in mountain communities. Though large, they are still a species of the goat-like katun and well adapted to keeping their footing on uneven, rocky terrain. Hard to reach communities do not always have the funds to import and export goods via air transport, so the use of ramshorn katun for transporting items up and down the mountains remains as ubiquitous as it ever was.   While ramshorn katun are common as beasts of burden, there is also a thriving ramshorn enthusiast community including farmers and breeders of all stripes. Once a year, the Ramshorn Stone is awarded to the person who presents the finest ramshorn katun at the Evercold Farming Festival, run by Glim Merrene's Agricultural Guild.    At the festival, ramshorn katun are shipped in via air freight, land transport and even sailed up the Icechurn by intrepid farmers from Avail, Koshtonir and Gorokir. The ramshorns are then paraded around a show ring, inspected by expert judges and invited to compete in a variety of tests of strength and endurance in a riotous competition that lasts for three full days, before the annual prize of money and - more importantly - possession of the historic Ramshorn Stone, is awarded to the person who rearer the finest ramshorn katun in all of Hrashchar.   The greatest ramshorn katun in history was an enormous male katun called Snork, who was raised by a grizzled hobgoblin farmer from Avail. Snork won his owner the Ramshorn Stone for eight years in a row, before he finally lost the prize to a much younger female the following year. The most confident breeders still claim that they've "got a Snork this year," but no other ramshorn katun has ever won the stone more than three times.
