Muckman Species in Chaotic Potential | World Anvil

Muckman

The malevolent muckmen! Marauding masters of mud and murder, second to none in the arts of stealth and sinister evil. Terrible creatures, not of flesh and bone, but tar-like clay. A viscus vermin of the worst variety! Absolutely not your average bargain-basement monstrosity of death.

From the gloomy stink of urban sewers, to the haunted halls of forgotten ruins, they call any damp decay their home. Also, these slippery scoundrels have a spectrum of sickening natural shades. They come in all types, from gruesome ghoulish grays to beastly browns, with brown-white muck all the way through. But one trait they all share is their glowing yellow eyes.

Anyone foolish enough to lock eyes with those sinister orbs will find the world around them fade away. Their limbs refusing to move, held in place by the monster’s mesmerizing yellow glare. The victim hasn’t been turned to stone. Instead, it’s far worse. A muckman’s prey is paralyzed. A living prison of flesh and bone, at the not so tender murderous mercies of these monsters.

Deadly Bag of Tricks

But their eye-popping appearance is the least of anyone’s worries. These malicious monsters have another trick up their muck. Once they corner their prey, they can turn any part of their form into deadly, rock-hard weapons. Fists become hammers, spiked maces, and more. All the better to pound their prey senseless. Softening them up before wrapping around them anaconda style. Because these muckmen are huggers of the deadliest kind!

After they have squeezed the life out of their victim, they consume their meal. But not by swallowing whole. Instead, muckmen ooze inside to consume their prey, leaving only the outer shell, a simple husk of skin, which they wear as a gruesome disguise.

For days, they will wander the streets in a near perfect disguise of their past victim looking for more food. The only clue to the terrible truth being the yellow glow of their unearthly gaze. They’ll wear these sinister suits until either it rots away or the muckman locates new prey.

Singing Death Dealers

But don’t let their ravenous hunger or penchant for peculiar disguises fool you. These muckmen are no mindless monsters. Crafty and clever, they learn the language and some skills of anyone they consume. A fiendish way to slip-slide among potential meals unnoticed. As for their own language, it’s slick-sweet music to their ears and terror to anyone else.

These ghastly ghouls sing to each other like hauntingly harmonious bellows. Using words and tunes as complex and intricate as any orchestra. That is, if that orchestra performed a symphony in time to an adventurer’s worst nightmare.

So for any adventurer deep in the darkened tunnels of a desolate ruin or in the damp labyrinth of a city sewer, listen sharp! The baleful baritones that echo in the damp darkness are the songs of the muckmen. A symphony of impending doom. The last warning to run, as these malevolent maestros of muck are near, and are always to invite you over as dinner!
