The Commonplace

[Prompt: An iconic building o landmark representing a location]   Some recall about the Commonplace   I think there will be no fictional building of mine more iconic or famous than the Commonplace, at least to my mind's denizens. There's good reason for that: The Commonplace exists in multiple instances, in any number of places across my many worlds. I can't even say how many instances of it exist (and that is quite the point). The number is ever shifting, as Commonplace doorways appear and disappear all the time.   I haven't quite worked out exactly what causes a Commonplace instance to pop up. I've toyed with it being based on need, pulling from that one Doctor Who quote about the TARDIS always taking the Doctor where they need to go. I want the criteria to be a little more interesting that, but I'm in the right ballpark.   As for what the Commonplace is, I think that is ever-shifting, too. There are a few commonalities, though. It is always a place for food, rest, knowledge, and entertainment. Percy is here to take care of people, to learn, and share what he's gained. I love the idea that the Commonplace can be simultaneously a safe haven and a labyrinth, its halls acting according to your intent. And, I imagine, there's always a job to do in the Commonplace. If you need money and you aren't above getting your appendages dirty, Percy'll have hard, fairly-compensated work for you.   Most hours, the Commonplace well resembles a cozy tavern, nestling pockets of "library space" full of bookshelves and lamplit reading spaces. Sometimes it's a maker shop, sometimes it's a performance hall. Sometimes it's a Claire's. It kinda shifts, bits at a time where no one's looking, according to the vibe and needs of the space. In the Commonplace, room reads you.   And it is always, always, a safe place to rest. Leomund's Tiny Hut? More like Bährington's Cozy Cabin. Percy once adopted all of the lost kids with his husband Smee (long story), so you can always find a couple running around the front of house. In the back, there's a warehouse of a room chock full of bunkbeds-turned-playground-equipment, and everything else a semi-feral child needs to thrive. It is positively brimming with baby furries, an ecosystem all its own.   Don't worry; if you're here to sleep, you won't have to share a room with a hundred be-footie-pajama-ed kids. There are plenty of other spaces in a variety of environments to choose from. You're even welcome to stay in Percy's cave, if he's not dad napping in the La-Z-Boy himself.   Oh yeah, did I mention Percy is Baby Bear, All Grown Up?   Nothing to do with the Commonplace itself, but colorful to mention!
