Mogullab

Mogullab is a triennial celebration of the mogfishof the River Durran by the Morton Drakiss. It is marked by a night long feasting on roasted mogfish and celebration of the endurance of their colony. The feasting is of such great extent that many drakiss will not eat for several days afterwards and it is not uncommon for drakiss to die of over eating at it - one or two will typically perish this way each time mogullab is celebrated.

History

Mogullab dates back to before Jorrath's death - for when Jorrath came to besiege the nascent town of Morton they were accompanied by part of the crew and several of the new arrivals from Sbrithnir's Crew, accompanying the two eggs from the clutch of Jorrath and Sbrithnir. They camped outside Morton and on the night of Jorrath's triumph over Carron, Third Moran Duke (see The Legend of Carron's Daughter) they feasted late into the night on mogfish taken from the nest that the fishermen of Morton had left in place when Jorrath came.

This first feast was later tinged with sorrow, leading as it did to Jorrath's death but the feast marked not just the last celebration of Jorrath's days but also the expansion of the Crew with the new arrivals and the joy of receipt of the two eggs. It continued to be celebrated sporadically over the following decades sometimes as a subtext for the Eggheads, sometimes in rebellious spirit against their human overlords, sometimes in nostalgia for the old days. These reasons all play a part in the make up of drakiss' thoughts and feelings on the festival - but since it is first and foremost a celebration of the drakiss community few ever abstain from it.

By the end of the first centuary MD, the festival had become well established as an annual event and it remained so until the year 341 - the year following the Redwinter and the aftermath of the The Devastation of Naros. The news of the loss of some of their kin with the destruction of Hrafkell's crew would have made this a much more subdued event than normal, but that year and the following year the mogfish had disappeared from the parts of the Durran around Morton and a feast of mogfish was simply not possible. With the return of the mogfish in 343 MD, the festival resumed but at the reduced frequency. On the years that it isn't celebrated the day is kept as one for quiet contemplation of the drakiss's limited ability to control the world they live in.
