Pentaland

The Principality of Pentaland is an aristocratic republic, where powerful nobles elect a primus inter pares to rule them for life, or untill they are dismissed by the Council. While clearly no one has more power than the nobles, their rule is not as oppressive elsewhere, as it Pentalander nobles are accostumed to grant many civil liberties to their subjects, especially merchants and artisans, and are wary to provoke farmers to the point of revolt, which is something Pentelanders are very much known for.
Pentalander are very different among each other, but all are proud of their being part of something so unique as the Principality. Here one can find the most different races working along each other, powerful nobles playing deaf to the common people's satire, and merchants playing politics when they're really supposed not to.
Pentaland is locked between three great powers (Brumia, the Trade Company of Ultramoesia and Zalia) while being no great power itself. It survived thanks to the far-sightedness of its rulers and its smart and, as some critics say, reckless diplomatic manouvering. At the moment Pentaland is a close ally to Brumia, which is considered as reliable both as a protector and as a partner that desires no westward expansion, at least for now.
