Casimira

Scope

The motivation behind building Casimira

I feel as though I have a few reasons for wanting to build this world. To begin with, I want a playground to try all kinds of new things in and see what my real writer's voice is. There is a basis here in another world, but the more I work on it, the more I want it to be for me and not feel like I have to continually try to remember the source material to get it just right. I can write as many or as few words as I'd like on each topic and make them my own.I also want to write this story and world for those who used to play the game this all started in. We didn't get to hear the end of the story and I'd like to see it through. Not only that, but one of my friends that I played that game with is no longer with us. I want to build this world and build up these characters for him.

The goal of the project

I want to get through a full explanation of the world of my novel, which is no small undertaking. But I'd really like for my future readers to be able to dive into the world and get as much or as little information as they want. I hope to have a reference that I can come back to again and again for consistency and I want to provide something that will really show the depth of my world.

In addition to that, I want to create an RPG that can allow other people to tell their own stories within the scope of my world so they can enjoy it even more.

Casimira's Unique Selling point

My world is different from the standard fantasy novel because there are multiple types of dragons, each with their own unique abilities. I'm sure that's been done before, but I do think the world is unique for the dragons' powers and the world history. There is a hook with the conflict between the land of dragons and the neighboring kingdom, as well as the fact that each country is loosely based on a "real" country, but with the changes that come with magic.

Theme

Genre

My world is very high fantasy with a little bit of tech thrown in. Magic abounds and is common most everywhere and it is not unusual for at least one member of each family to have elemental magic. Everyone at a minimum has the capability to do little things with magic, even if it's nothing more than basic tasks. There is an area of the world where there isn't really magic, but that's because the kingdom has completely outlawed it. In that area of the world, technology is more common than magic, but that technology was created with the use of magic, although those in power currently have no idea.

Reader Experience

I want my readers to have a sense of wonder as they experience my stories and the world they're set in. I want them to come away wanting to learn more, to delve deep into the magic and wander through the different towns and cities, to experience each culture and the people who live in the world.

Reader Tone

I would say that my world has both bright and dark parts to it (ex. Elan and Ari, bright. Faye, dark) There are a variety of different cultures and I feel as though each comes with its own benefits and pitfalls. Magic makes life easier for people, but it also brings more pain too when someone misuses it. Fate plays a huge factor in how people perceive the world and that gives them hope, but also allows for more of the difficult things to happen to ordinary people. If someone wandered into the Southern Lands, for example, and found a village, they would be forced to choose between forgetting everything they've seen so they can go home, or leaving their entire life behind, never to return.

Recurring Themes

  1. The inevitability of the flow of Time and eventually Death.
  2. Corruption under the surface of every kingdom and world power.
  3. The dance of Fear and Hope.

Character Agency

The main characters absolutely have the ability to change and shape the world around them. It's not that they themselves are powerful characters, but their actions have a powerful and long-lasting ripple effect across their world.

This is true for the way a campaign would be set up as well. In a world like this, people who step up to do something can leave lasting changes wherever they go. They may not see the way they affect people and the future of Casimira, but most heroes and adventurers don't while on their journey.

Focus

Race Relations: Dragons and humans have been at war for a long time and no one really remembers why. However, the humans in the rest of the world believe dragons are non-sentient monsters who only want to take out their homes so they can feed. Dragons look at humans as lesser beings, not worthy of partnership and respect.

Some of this may have to do with the Great Calamity, but if the dragons know, they haven't shared with humans, not even the Dragon Riders.

Military Relations: Alexi and the Northern Lands are the only countries with a standing army outside of the Birdfolk. Most countries outside of those are either more nomadic or have something else that protects them. For example, Novami has mountains that separate it from most other kingdoms and the Southern Lands have dragons. No military force in the continent knows how to effectively deal with dragons in force. The closest is Alexi and even they don't know how to deal with more than a handful at a time.

Technology and Magic: The Northern Lands are the primary location of supposedly non-magical technology. Little do they know, everything they do as well is powered by magic. I'd like to talk more about just how these two interact and how magical crystals work to focus the power that everyone has inside them.

  • Animals
  • How the rivers affect dynamics between kingdoms

Drama

The Southern Lands and Alexi are at war. It has always been this way, because the people of Alexi think dragons are no more than monsters and the dragons are tired of dying to patrols. Raids happen frequently between the two nations, but neither ever goes far into the others' territory. This has been going on since the kingdom was established and dragons felt as though they were going to start crossing the river and encroach on their territory. There appears to be no resolution in sight, partially because the rest of the continent doesn't know that the Southern Lands are in fact a nation of their own and those that live there try to keep it that way.

The Birdfolk and Scalefolk are constantly at war with each other because of fundamental personality and cultural differences that no one has ever been able to agree upon a resolution to. Their cultures are opposite in nearly every way possible. The Scalefolk are a draconic culture with elemental magic and more nomadic, while the Birdfolk are bird-like and militaristic, with only light and dark magic available to them.

There is something dark about parts of the kingdom of Novami and no one can explain it. The people from there don't notice it because it's been a part of their existence for a long time, but outsiders avoid these areas if at all possible, unless they have shady dealings they want to remain a secret. Although anyone can know anything in Novami if they can pay the right price.

The Northern Lands are slowly building their technology to put them on equal footing with the rest of the world and their magic. While the people there are happy about this, some mages are concerned about the very militarized country.

There is definitely some tension between Ismena and the Crystal Traders. There is a lot of regulation and other factors in the crystal trade and usually not enough supply, so it is up to the mage council and the Traders to work out prices. This leaves a great deal of tension among the two groups.

While generally limited to the kingdom itself, the Peregrine clans fight amongst each other for territory and resources. They have generally good relationships with their neighbors, though.
