Fabler

Stories are popular in the world of Candesca. People of all ages and classes love to gather around and listen to a good story, whether it be a folktale, an adventure, a historical event, or even something so simple as the life of a birdwatcher who catalogs the different species. As such, storytellers are in high demand. Every settlement has at least one. It is a serious business. But the Fablers are something more. Fablers are the storytellers of the kings and the nobles, and as such, they are the best this world has to offer.
While both storytellers and Fablers can earn money from their tales, a Fabler is employed by someone in a position of power to be their personal storyteller. A town is often evaluated by the prowess of the lord's Fabler. Kings will often put their Fabler head to head with the Fabler of another country and bet on the outcome. The kingdom's Fabler is a source of national pride and patriotism. A Fabler often gives rousing speeches and is viewed as someone who is educated and knowledgeable.
Fablers are not simply hired. They are trained. Youth can seek an apprenticeship to learn to become a Fabler. If one is accepted into apprenticeship, they will be trained on how to captivate an audience and improvise. They will also learn all the best stories and then some. The best Fablers can hear a request and come up with at least three stories to tell.
Not anyone can be a Fabler. It takes someone with a sharp mind, a good memory, a quick wit, a dash of imagination, a healthy dose of grandeur, and a good voice. They must be quick to learn and charismatic. It is not an easy job, and every Fabler takes pride in his or her work.
