Pen Cannoc
Pen Cannoc sits on a promontory overlooking the River Pelorus far below it, as the lands plunge downward from the high plateau into Imperial and Swadian lowlands. Many smaller rivers and creeks run through the foothills to the East of the city, which feed the river Pelorus. Legends speak of the water-nymphs who live in the dark pools formed in the rivers and creeks of the descending hills, luring travellers and invaders to their deaths except, on those rare occasions when they fall in love with a hero and grant him victory and blessings. Certainly the fisherfolk of this region have learned respect for the perils of the Upper Pelorus, where a small misstep on slippery stone can cast one off a precipice into the waters below.
The city is a bastion of The Battanian Confederacy, and holds a commanding view of the Southern approach to the Battanian heartlands. Backed against a mountain wall, and built across a number of creeks and rivers, the city would be extremely difficult to attack, as the attackers would have to cross multiple hills and valleys, each filled with dark and deep rivers. The land surrounding it is more highland in nature, rather than wooded, and is largely infertile for farming. However, the city produces in massive amounts a key but overlooked resource: clay. Pen Cannoc is the primary extractor of clay on the continent, which is needed to produce pottery, without which the preservation of foodstuffs becomes difficult.
Much of the food of the city comes from fishermen who brave the dark and dangerous rivers the run through the nearby hills. Though the fish is plentiful, there are many waterborne creatures that prowl it's waters, dragging many fishermen to their deaths.
