Marks, Draconic Lineages, and other Inherited Magics

Similarly to how the Aasimar and preserved through the passing down of the holy blood through their children, so too are there other inherited magics of Calradia. Many are simply referred to as "marks", and can come from a variety of sources, with a significant difference in how they are perceived.   A good example of a "mark", is the mark of hospitality. It is quite rare, but is passed down through families who have been provided shelter to a spirit of the Fey when they were in need. In exchange for their help in their darkest hours, these sprites have been known to be able to give their hosts a mark of hospitality, infusing them with a small shard of magic that aids them in their hospitality to others. The myriad marks follow similar patterns, gifted to mortals for a variety of acts. Many are considered good, and are a sign that someone in your ancestry was generally a holy, or at least helpful person. Most people cannot discern the origin of a particular mark, but most know what they are in general. for most, their lives are quite normal with a mark, only gaining a few useful attributes from it.   Darconic lineages and draconic related marks, though, are quite different. In the First Age, before the rise of the empire, dragons often roamed the skies of Calradia. Their egos were second to none, and many even formed their own cults, which could sometimes form into societies of their own. These dragon Cults would worship a dragon in exchange for protection, sacrificing gold, resources, and frequently their own children to the dragon to be consumed. In exchange, the dragons would deign to gift some of their most ardent followers with draconic traits, or small tastes of draconic magic. It is from this that the draconic lineages and marks were born.    Many view these as marks of shame in today's world, as proof that your ancestors were evil-doers, and unholy cultists. Dwarves in particular have a hatred of these people, as family lineage and ancestry mean so much to them.
