Illyria City

Illyria was the last bastion of the Daemon Prince Aloth, and was the target of the final crusade that finally banished the Daemons from their hold on Calradia at the end of the Second Age. Since this time, the city has become heavily populated as both a holy site, and a location of a wealth of magical power.   Illyria sits upon what is called a "magical nexus", which is a location where the winds of magic swirl together, to create a kind of semi-permanent storm. This meant that is was the perfect place for the last stand of the Daemons, but also that it is the perfect place for those of magical inclination to meet their full potential. Unfortunately, this has also left the city in the constant shadow of dark clouds, earning it the name of "the dark city".    Many sorcerers discover their powers when living in Illyria, and the city has a disproportionally high occurrence of sorceress and other magically inclined individuals. While the great colleges of magic may still reside in the imperial capital, it is Illyria that is the calling place of those who are born with magic.   Illyria is a semi-anarchic place, governed by a number of lords who, all being powerful sorcerers, use their unique talents to assert their influence over aspects and areas of the city. Many suspect that their powers are tied to this place in some way, making them have no interest in leaving or conquering anywhere else.   The city is therefore quite introverted, but still fights for control of local trade routes, in order to get the best prices for luxury goods and grain from the South, to feed the hunger of it's masses for bread, and it's magical elite for luxury.   The city declared independence from the empire soon after the death of Emperor Aristarcos. The Empire since then has not attempted to retake the city, as spies and scouts suggest that the high waterside walls of the city, manned by fireball-flinging sorcerers, is not worth the price of trying to take it. Since the city does not seek to expand it's influence, it is a problem not worth confronting....yet.
