Icaran Wildlands

The Icaran Wildlands are an expanse of tundra, which borders the The Western Calradian Empire , the Tsardom of the Vaegirs and The Battanian Confederacy. It is claimed by all 3 nations, and has been an on and off battlefield for the better part of 30 years.
Each claims the land for a different reason. The Battanians view it's woods (or what are left of them) as holy, and part of their ancestral lands. The Vaegirs, need it as a land access route to raid Imperial lands and expand their territory to the South for more fertile soil. The Imperials want to reclaim it as part of the empire that was lost, but also know (from some imperial records in the capital), that there is a massive untouched gold vein that runs under the land. This vein may be enough to fund the army for decades.
It was once a land well settled, and extremely productive. The area is a prime cattle grazing area for half of the year, and is chockful of minerals near the surface that can be easily mined. Now it is more like a wasteland. Some villages/towns still exist, but are almost city-states of themselves, who rely on themselves for protection against roaming armies. Most villages are built up around destroyed or abandoned castles. In addition, myriad dangerous beasts roam the tundra. It is an untamed and uncivilized land, no-one truly knows what is going on there at any time, other than the armies that roam it, fighting over invisible ever-changing borders.
