High Calradic Language in Calradia | World Anvil

High Calradic

High Calradic is the language of the elite. Rather than being a haphazard evolution of a language, High Calradic was purposefully designed in the Third Age to be used for efficient administration, but eventually just became the language of the learned classes. It is similar to Low Calradic in many ways, but includes longer and more precise terms, as well as scientific language used in engineering and magical studies. The language is different enough from Low Calradic that, althout someone without knowledge of it may be able to understand simple ideas like "they are talking about me" or "they are angry about something", they would be unable to grasp the details without at least some help.

Most books, scrolls, manuscripts, and laws are written in High Calradic, making it an invaluable language for those seeking to understand the society in which they live better.

Notably, Battanian nobles refuse to use High Calradic, as they view it as a pompous and derogatory insult against their own peoples, as well as an Imperialist attempt to override their culture. Battanian nobles do, however, often employ servants fluent in High Calradic to translate texts to Low Calradic. Although Battanians may not speak it, many have begun learning how to understand it, but not speak it.
