Wessex

Defining Characteristics

Physical

Wessex is the westernmost of the provinces and shares a land border only with Victoria.

The Archipelago of Wessex (often confusingly referred to as just The Archipelago, for there are others) is a group of islands that stretches out into the Western Ocean and which includes Yarrahey, the largest true island in the Western Provinces.

Industrial

Part of the Victorian coalfield extends into north-eastern Wessex and thus it has its own concentration of heavy industry there but, otherwise, Wessex has a very rural population with a broadly agricultural lifestyle.

Social

Wessex is noted for its beautiful west coast with its unspoiled sandy beaches and secluded bays; many come here from within and without the province to simply savour its delights. They do not go there seeking the brash excitement of the seaside resort, for Wessex is not that kind of a place. Life in Wessex moves at its own pace: slow, steady and contemplative; a place where nothing is ever too much trouble but where patience is a virtue.
