Shadowfell
The Shadowfell exists as somewhat of a counterpart to the Feywild, in the sense that it is a reflection of the Prime Material Plane. Unlike the Feywild, it is a bleak, desolate place full of decay and death.
The shadows of the ancient library appeared as though they followed and watched Elise as she struggled in the dim light to search the shelves. A muffled groan in the corner startled her; she looked around, must be the creaky old floorboards she thought. Elsie walked over to a dusty old mirror "Come on, pull yourself together girl," she told herself "find the tome, get back, and get paid. Easy." Suddenly Elise felt a hand close its cold fingers around her shoulder, but as she stared into the mirror there was nothing behind her. Slowly she turned her head and was greeted by a smile which bore sharp silvery fangs.
The most striking and immediate impression a visitor to the Shadowfell will experience is the lack of colour and light; no sun, moon, or stars adorn the vault of the inky black sky, and all things look as if the colour has leeched out, leaving nothing but black and white. A light source only illuminates half the distance it normally would, flames and fires put out less heat, and spells that deal with light or fire are much less predictable and prone to failure. On the other hand, although it would not illuminate as far, any light source on the plane can be spotted at a distance of up to ten times its normal range of illumination, such is the contrast to the constant gloom, similar to a star in the night sky.
Domains of Dread
In remote corners of the Shadowfell one can reach horrific demiplanes which are ruled over by accursed beings of terrible evil. One of the most infamous is the Valley of Bavoria, overlooked by the towering spires of Castle Ravenloft ruled by Count Strahd von Zarovich, the first vampire. These domains were created as prisons for these "darklords", however through cruelty of carelessness many innocent mortals are trapped in these domains too.A traveller is greeted by the Gates of Bavoria
