Rurik Opalhammer grew up in the mountain homestead of Kairn Dearg in the Kingdom of Kahz'rul. He belongs to a family of lapidarists who own the local Kolskegger Mine, a source of gemstones, which is managed by his parents Jod and Helja. Rurik learned the jewellers craft along with the rest of his siblings, but he and his older sister Kathra were much more interested in fighting back the marauding Orcs.
One autumn a band of Orcs laid siege to Kairn Dearg. After many weeks of hard fighting the homestead fell. Many were killed and others were captured, including Rurik and his brother Bolund, who was executed next to Rurikand killed. Throughout his life Rurik felt as though he had another sense. He frequently had sensations that he was not quite where he thought he was, and had feelings that there were strange powers or forces nearby. It was in this moment, when it was Rurik's turn to be executed, that he learned what he was. Rurik was transported to a world of swirling fog and distorted sounds; the orc and it's executioners axe appeared distant, although the ghosts of those that fell in the siege were close. Rurik was a Horizon Walkers , and he was in the Ethereal Plane. This dimension allowed Rurik to escape his death and he fled south towards the Carrifran Wildwoods, while his remaining family made it to the Dwarven capital. Although this forest is forbidden Rurik heard the tales that it was home to another plane of existence and he thought he could reflect on his new abilities here. Rurik arrived at the the forest and encountered the Feywilds. After much time proving himself to the inhabitants he fostered a friendship with the druids and the Fey who helped Rurik learn much about the planes of existence and horizon walking. Rurik would go on to use his new abilities to protect the Feywilds, safeguard the material realm, and bring balance to other planes when possible.

There is a large burn mark on his right cheek preventing facial hair from growing on that side.
Apparel & Accessories
Rurik wears a green Peryton Feather attached to his right pauldron, a trophy from the creature which once terrorised his homestead. Rurik wears heavy armour and has attatched a faded blue cloak.

Rurik wields the Axe of Thunderbolts, gifted to him by the Fey Lords of the Seelie Court.

Personal history
During one of Rurik's missions he tracked a nefarious Dragon-born wizard, by the name of Durenvoyl, into the Elemental Plane of Fire. Rurik fought and chased the Dragon-born through Ignis, however he eventually escaped and scarred the Dwarf. It was in this plane of fire, however, that Rurik encountered another Horizon Walker; a human woman by the name of Thalia Stormwind. Thalia became an ally to Rurik while in the Elemental Plane, and upon exiting she gifted Rurik a set of Sending Stones. These allowed the two to keep in touch over the vast distances that their profession separated them by. Thalia also mentioned that there are many more Horizon Walkers out there, communicating by Sending Stones, and that once in a long while they try to meet on the same plane to share their tales and experiences, as well as a drink.
