Myrmidons

The Myrmidons are a loose group of powerful warriors, spread mostly across the human race but also finding appeal among the Dwarves. Their life is that of battle, and many are dedicated to Medb, Goddess of War. Despite this, the Myrmidons are not a religious organisation, preferring instead to hone their skills in battle. Many act as a specialised group of warriors, sometimes in teams of only four or six, but all are trained in formation fighting with spear and shield and can assemble in phalanxes as large as 500. Their skill in sword, shield and spear has made them one of the most expensive mercenary forces in the known realms, fighting for gold but also glory, often choosing a side that has little hope in winning and turning the tide. Their infamous black leather armour strikes fear into the hearts of their enemies wherever they go.

He cut down ten men where he stood, and went on to fight through another fifty. Structure

The Myrmidons are a loose fighting force, with many living days apart from one another. This lack of structure takes the full fighting force of 500 days or weeks to assemble, and the entire Myrmidon army months. Nevertheless their leadership is absolute, with a single hero leading the charge and generals commanding companies 500 strong. Besides their leader, generals and foot soldiers the Myrmidons lack officer positions, as their shield wall acts as one and all are trained in leadership from an early age.
